WELLINGTON.
Remarks on W.B.C. Meeting—Buccleuch —Zimmerman—Cnp Wagering. WELLINGTON, October 23. The bulk of the horses which took part in the W.R.C. Spring Meeting will have taken .heir departure ere these lines reach the public. F. Tilley’s team consisting of St. Joe, Apa, ’Frisco and Martello go South forthwith, a’so the teams owned by Hon. J. D. Ormond, E. J. Watt and Jervis George. J. Prosser and W. Davis will follow later in the week, the former may not assist at the Masterton meeting, where he has a number of horses engaged, owing to the stable’s rider Jenkins having to attend at .Wanganui on the date of the Masterton ■ meeting, for examination at the hands of the Metropolitan Club in connection with happenings at Marton and Rangitikei. Mr. J. F. Buchanan, owner of Buccleuch and Fire-iron, looked in at Trentham on his way home from Sydney; the Canterbury owner seems fairly sanguine that his pair will run well in their Cup
and Steward’s engagements, and was pleased to receive news of Buccleuch’s doub e victory at Oamaru. The. halfbrother to Welbeck has gained many friends lately, and although some Riccarton touts have expressed the unreasonable opinion chat Buceleuch has no chance in the Cup, his connections have no doubts about his staying ability and soundness. The Hon. J. D. Ormond’s Cup representative, Zimmerman, accompanied the team in charge of Stuaic Waddell, which assisted at the W.R.C. meeting. The big son of Birkenhead was, allotted careful work during his stay at Trentham; but d d not impress the touts to any extent as a likely Cup winner. It is generally conceded that a mile and a-half is far enough for Zimmerman, but in a weak field he might accomplish another four furlongs; report says that his trainer is hopeful of his prospects, and has supported him at 100 to 8 to win a few hundreds. The fol’owing horses will proceed to Masterton for the ensuing meeting, which begins on Thursday:—St. Amelia, Warloch, Oblivion, Galahad, Splendid Idea, The Stake, Shrapnel Shell, Compass, Sen Sim, Velodia, St. Killian and Liberator; they raced unsuccessfully at Trentham, but in the less aristocratic company engaged at Masterton may make amends for their recent defeats. The metallicians report very little doing in the way of Cup wagering. Elevation is now quoted at 3 to 1. Paritutu has increased in favour, and anything better than 8 to 1 is accepted. Zimmerman has been supported at tens, Buccleuch and Apa at 12 to 1. The wagering is principa’ly confined to the double— Cup and Steward’s. Martello is being coupled with Cup favourites at from 100 to 2 to 100 to 3. Lord Soult, Contender and Kairoma have also plenty of supporters for the Steward’s.
