The handicaps for the second day’s races are due in next Monday morning’s paper. * * * * Acceptances for the Gonville Hack Hurdles and Putiki Hack Handicap at the Wanganui J.C.’s Spring Meeting are due next Monday, the 23rd inst. * * * * The winning jockeys at Horowhenua were: —C. Jenkins, 4; L. Wilson, W. Price, and A. McConnon, 2 each; Milne, Murfitt, A. Olliver, and S. Reid one each. * * * * At Ashburton J. Pine and E. Scoullar were the only jockeys to score two wins; the one-win brigade were:—E. Cotton, J. Hagerty, L. C. King, A. Piper, A. Pringle, C. Hart, H. Donovan, F. E. Jones, J. Rankin, and W. Retter. * * * * Master Delaval and Paritutu have been nominated for the Spring Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, at the coming Hawke’s Bay J.C. Spring Meeting. Uenuku also figures as an entrant in the name of Mr. G. P. Donnelly. * * * * In our advertising columns the Railway Department publish the timetable for the special trains to Avondale for next Saturday. * * * « ’ St. Claimei- who scored a double at Horowhenua, is reported to be one of the speediest horses in training this spring. .

Gladsome has been sent from Sydney to Melbourne on a visit to Positano, **♦ • < Of the winning sires at Horowhenua, St. Clements, Pilgrim’s Progress, The Officer, Stepniak, and Conqueror scored two winners each; Soult, Cyrenian, Explosion and Mahaki were represented by one each. * * * * The winning isires at Ashburton were: Stepniak, with 3 winners; Euroclydon and Prince Imperial, 2 eachand Merrie England, Finland, Birkenhead, Benzoin, Pilgrim’s Progress, Saracen and St. Ilario, one each. * * * * The Avondale J.C. are to be congratulated on their numerous and very satisfactory acceptances. Given fine weather we should see some splendid sport at the first spring meeting of this district. * * * * No Shot ran a really good race at Horowhenua, and must score a win shortly.

* * . * Ancycle again proved a ghastly failure at Horowhenua. * * * * Coleman has Ben Johnson, Omati, and Lady Regel in constant work at Ellerslie. * * * * Playmate, by Stepniak out of the Hawke’s Bay mare Eketerini Passeropoulo, is the second Stepniak to be put to the hurdling biz—Kremlin, I fancy, was the first—and he won anyhow on both days at Horowhenua. * * * * The Seaton Delaval gelding Akarana has been allowed to drop out of his engagement in the Avondale Cup. The North Shore stable has still a representative in the race in Tui Cakobau. It is a matter for wonder to the public why there was no inquiry made into the peculiarly inconsistent form shown by Hiro at Marton and Horowhenua. Lennard has been exercising three two-year-olds at Ellerslie regularly. * * * » . W. Townsend is at Ellerslie with Delegate, Philosopher, and the Soult— Pretoria filly. The first and last of these are engaged at the Avondale J.C.’s Spring Meeting. * * * * T. Williams has Shrapnel in great nick, and the bay son of The Workman should go very close to snavelling the Avondale Cup next Saturday. * * * * The New Zealand-bred Maori Girl (Stepniak Maori Belle) ■ scored a win at Canterbury Park, New South Wales, recently. The notice of readers is drawn to the advertisement of the secretary of the Wanganui Jockey Club, who notifies the public that moneys for investment on the totalisator must reach his office not later than 11 a.m. on each day of the races. A point is made of the fact that “ no notice will be taken of contingent instructions.” There will be no double totalisator .** * * The following are the latest foalmgs at Cambria Park: — Harpist (Hotchkiss—Lyrelinus), a colt to Soult; Senga (Hotchkiss—Agnes) a filly.to Obligado; The Dell (The Officer—Faun ~ a filly to Eton. *** * ■ Boniform is doing badly in his training m Australia, and Mason is. reported to be having great difficulty in keeping Mr. Stead’s colt going in his work. * * * * Haldane, Port Light, Catch-’em, Lady Hune and . Master Clements, all under the care of C. Weal, have been doing regular and useful work on the tracks at Ellerslie. * * * * The Intercolonial Horse Agency have for sale some very finely-bred horses, performers as well as maidens. Such names as Kola Nip, Lady Cressy Field Marshall, Storyteller, and Lord Seaton will be found in the list published in our advertising columns.

Solitary foaled a colt to Salvadan itlhiß week. * * * Pouring rain greeted the racing public at the Horowhenua meeting. In this respect the Horowhenua R.G. fared no better than the 'Marton J.C. did the previous week. ♦ * * * Old Haydn looked in splendid form when he was shipped to Sydney last ’ week. * * • * * * Cunningham has been working Octoroon, Quadroon, Lucrece and LureBome at Ellerslie, and they all look well. * * * * The Pakuranga Hunt Club are holding a race meeting at Avondale on Saturday, October sth inst., of which full particulars are published in our advertising columns. Mr. H. H. Hayr is the actirg secretary. Castaway (Electioneer — Queen Mountain Maid) is advertised to travel Panmure, Tamaki, Howick, Papatoetoe, and the surrounding districts. A glance at the advertisement in our /present issue will show horse-breeders what a fine chance of a good get may be derived by interviewing Mr. Geo. Robinson, who has the handling of Castaway’s business. W. Mobberley, the local trainer, has leased La Cigale, another ratty mare of the same character as Sweet Alice. If Mobberley can improve her manners she may repay him for his patience in training her. * * * * Seaton Delaval’s list for the present Beason is full, and no further entries will be accepted. * * * * At the annual meeting of the Dannevirke Jockey Club the annual bal-ance-sheet and report were unanimously adopted. Mr. George Hunter was re-elected president, Messrs. Gordon Lloyd and R. N. Blakiston vicepresidents, and Mr. Charles Baddeley treasurer. To take the places of the four retiring committeemen, Messrs. . Rathbone, Neagle, McDermott and Hare Pine were elected. A resolution was passed that in the future members can vote by post. The tote figures show the rapid progress e -VoF 1g1(L954; 1905, £14,661; 1906, £16,971; 1907, £18,980. . * * * * \ At Randwick last Thursday the New Zealand colt Maranui, working on the outer portion of the course proper, galloped six furlongs in lm. 18s., which is a record for that portion of the track. * * * * At Tattersail’s meeting in Sydney on Saturday last, Apologue ran third in the Spring Handicap. Maranui followed amongst the unplaced division in the Rawson Stakes. « « ♦ * Mr A. F. Douglas’ horses, Merriwai and Needlework, were shipped to Sydney by the s.s. Miowera. The Napier-owned pair have been entered for events to be decided at the Australian Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting, at the conclusion of which it is intended to take them across to Victoria with a view to their competing at the V.R.C. Spring Meeting. * * * * In referring to Maranui’s display in the Rawson Stakes on Saturday last, the “Sydney Daily Telegraph” says . there was no greater disappointment at Tattersail’s meeting than Maranui. The son of Malatua ran very badly, and never appeared to be able to call up the necessary pace to enable him to take a hand with the leading division. The New Zealand colt should have done better, even allowing that he did not get off with the leaders, and was making his first appearance in public. -** * * Backers who are supporting Buccleuch for the New Zealand Cup are certainly taking a big risk (writes “The Possible”). The son of Benzoin is anything but a sound horse, and, therefore, quite apart from his prospc"3 cf seeing out a two-mile journey, there is the grave doubt as to whe her he will survive the necessary preparation for a race like this. * * * * Mr F. McGovern’s mare Polycaste was shipped south by the Rarawa on Tuesday last to Wanganui, via New Plymouth. It is reported that the ’ daughter of Nestor’s racing days are over, and that she is to be retired to the stud. »*• ■ • The Pakuranga Hunt Club will hold their annual race meeting at Avondale on October 5. Nominations close with the hon. secretary (Mr H. H. Hayr) on Friday next, at noon.
