SAFETY MATCH FACTORY FOR SYDNEY.

A private company has been got together which intends to expend £20,000 in a safety match factory in Sydney, and operations will be commenced as soon as possible, says the “Sunday Times.” When in full swing the factory will employ from 100 to 200 hands, and as the work is light, and will be well recompensed, it is not anticipated that the labour question will offer any difficulty. It may be mentioned that there are three factories of the kind in Natal, and two in Cape Colony, where the duty is slightly higher than here. There the timber for the purpose is imported, and will have to be for all time. Here the timber will be imported for a start, but as poplar and aspens can be grown, and mature rapidly, it is reckoned that in four or five years there will be no need to go outside the State. Poplar, in particu-’ lar, can be raised easily in waste land, and will open up a new avenue of wealth. The money for the venture has been readily subscribed by Sydney business men, and plenty more is available if necessary.

A well-known admiral has a beadful daughter. A young midshipman, with no resources but his pay, fell love with her, and asked the old gentleman for her hand. ■ The admiral at once taxed him with the fact that he had nothing Ms pay to live upon, hardly to keep him in white gloves. - ■ “ Well, admiral, what you say is true,” replied the middy. “sut when you married you were only jpt midshipman, with quite as small g, salary as mine. How did you along?” asked the middy, who believed that he had covered the old admiral with this reply. But not so, for ths old sea dog stormed up and thundered forth — “ I lived on my father-in-law for the first ten years, but /jpll be hanged if you are going to dty it!”
