BOXING.
(By “ Head Stop.”)
THE CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS. There was a very large crowd at the Opera House, Wellington, last Wednesday night, to witness the final contests for the Australasian boxing championships. The spectators showed the keenest interest throughout, and at_tim.es the enthusiasm was so great that the referee had difficulty in quelling the uproar. BANTAMS. E. Lusher (N.S.W.) v. J. Parker (Christchurch). Lusher boxed in a very scientific manner, and . was awarded the decision amidst hearty cheering. WELTER. J. Lane (N.S.W.) v. A. L. Nash (Christchurch). Both men abandoned all pretence at scientific boxing, and went simply for hard hitting. The New South Welshman was counted out in the second spell, and Nash declared the winner amidst a perfect yell of ' enthusiasm. LIGHT-WEIGHTS. D. White (N.S.W.) v. R. Mayze (Christchurch . The contest afforded an excellent exhibition of the finer .points of boxing; indeed, it was the finest bout of the evening, and was also superior to anything seen on the previous night. Victory went to Elliott. MIDDLE-WEIGHTS. A. J. Scanlon (Queensland) v. L. Fletcher (Wellington). Scanlon’s tremendous though unscientific manner non-pluissed the New Zealander, who was beaten from the start. Apparently C. Hill (N.S.W.) won the heavy-weight championship on the previous evening against Lloyd; so that honours are even, New Zealand winning three events and Australia three.
