COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS.

FURTHER RAILWAY CONCESSIONS URGED. Speaking at the meeting of the Council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce last Thursday, Mr B. Kent, chairman of the Railway Committee, said that certain letters had been received complaining of the lack of facilities afforded commercial travellers by the Railway Department. The committee had gone very carefully into the question, and recommended the Chamber to bring the matter before the Government, with a view to obtaining privileges for commercial travellers that were granted to other bodies of men, namely, that they should be allowed firstclass tickets at second-class rates, and that further concession should be made to travellers in respect to luggage where it was composed of samples, and not material for selling. The committee thought commercial travellers should be

allowed season tickets for the whole province. Tickets over certain sections of the lines were no good to some travellers, and representataion should be made to the authorities on this matter. Mr Macfarlane: Tickets are now issued for the whole of the island. The chairman refers to the matter as though the travellers themselves had to pay, whereas it is the firms employing them. Mr N. A. Nathan: There are very many who pay their own expenses, and travel on commission. Mr T. Peacock said it was unlikely the Government would grant tickets for the one province, as in that case it would have to treat other provinces similarly, and in the South the travellers went practically over the whole island. Mr N. A. Nathan said the case was different in Auckland, where there was no railway connection with other provinces. Mr J. B. Macfarlane said that when the Main Trunk line was finished there would be inter-communication, and it was scarcely worth while asking the concession for the remainder of the time. The recommendation of the committee was adopted.
