The cricket season is now a thing of the past, and bats and stumps have been laid aside until the spring. * * * * The Lord Chancellor, Lord Loreburn, known in the cricket world as “Bob” Reid, the Oxford University wicketkeeper of some years back, has been elected to the position of president of the Kent County Cricket Club in succession to Lord Harris, the retiring president. ♦ * * * The will of the late Alfred Shaw, the famous Notts cricketer, has been proved at £2,462, independent of his large interest in the firm of Shaw and Shrewsbury, Ltd. * * * * Lord Hawke has been elected captain of the Yorkshire Country Cricket XI., for the 25th successive year. * * * * The South African colours in England are green and gold, with the springbok on the breast of the blazer. • * * * The cricket season in England was to have been opened on Wednesday May 1, at Lord’s, with a match M.C.C. and Ground v. Notts. ♦ *■ * * Mr. James Elliman, of Embrocation fame, formally handed over to the
Slough Urban District Council (Eng.) on March 21, the trust deed of a magnificent recreation ground which he has presented to the town, covering 26 acres, 1 rood, 20 poles, together with a cheque for £lO,OOO, the amount of the endowment. The laying out of the ground and the construction of the handsome buildings upon it have occupied two and a-half years, and the cost has been £21,750, which, with the endowment, makes a total of £31,750.
