A YOUNG SMOKER.

In Dunedin last Thursday, a lad, under the age of 15 years, was before the Police Court, charged with smoking cigarettes. The station sergeant said that the boy evidently knew he was doing wrong, for he ran away when he was seen and gave a wrong name. “Why did you do that?” asked the magistrate. The Boy: “Because I didn’t want my mother to know.” The station sergeant said that smoking by boys was becoming a very common practice. His Worship discharged the. lad with a caution, on the understanding that his parents would give him a good thrashing.
