WEDNESDAY RUGBY UNION.

The annual general meeting of the Auckland Wednesday Union was held in the Foresters’ Hall last week, there being a representative attendance present. The chairman of committee (Mr. J. A. King) occupied the chair. The statement of accounts submitted by the hon. secretary (Mr. L. A. Frost) showed that the progress made by the union was most satisfactory. Although the sum advanced by the Auckland Rugby Union (£25) had been repaid towards the expenses of the union’s representatives in connection with the Rotorua match, the deficiency was smaller than expected. In view of the enthusiasm already

shown in this year’s competition, it was felt that the loss on last year’s working would be speedily liquidated. Five teams took part in the competition, an equal number to the previous year, and after an interesting struggle the Butchers’ team again proved victorious. The new club — the Post, Telegraph, and Railway—had made a favourable debut, and should do better during the incoming season, as should also the Bakers, the Grocers’, and the Milkmen’s combined team. Four “rep.” matches were played, one each against the Northern Wairoa, Auckland “B” team, Otahuhu, and Rotorua. These resulted in honours being equal, the first and third contests being won and the others lost. The match against the Auckland “B” team, which was played on a Saturday, marked an epoch in the records of the union, it being the first occasion on which their representatives had taken part in a Saturday contest, and the result —a defeat of 8 points after a good game—-was gratifying to the progress of the Wednesday game. Officers for the year were elected as follows: —Patron, Mr. A. M. Myers; president, Mr. Geo. Tutt; vicepresidents, Messrs. M. Molloy, T. Norden, Geo. Court, P. Virtue, and others; treasurer, Mr. C. Savoury; secretary, this appointment was held over, Mr. L. A. Frost, last year’s officer, consenting to act until a, successor was appointed; auditors, Messrs. J. A. King and A. Pierce. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. R. McGregor for his services to the union in the position of sole selector last season.
