THE YEARLING SALES.

GLENORA PARK. Last Thursday the annual sale of the Glenora Park yearlings took place at the well-known Papakura Stud Farm. A special train took a fair number out, while many drove to the ground. Accepting an invitation to motor out, an hour’s smart running saw us on the old spot some time ahead of the special, and this gave an opportunity for a glance over the yearlings, most of whom were looking splendid. Then after a hurried lunch

had been partaken of Mr. H. O. Nolan mounted the rostrum and the sale commenced. Genuine buyers were few and far between, and bidding was far from spirited. Eigtheen yearlings were disposed of for a total of 2366 guineas, an average of 131% guineas each. The highest pricedone was a dark brown colt by Soult from Vieux Rose. There was a spirited battle for his possession between Mrs. Coombes’ commissioner and Mr. George Robinson, and the latter had to give 410 guineas before he obtained possession of the half-

brother to Carl Rosa. The bay colt by Soult from Hotcherina also attracted bidders, being knocked down to Mr. A. Hughes at 400 guineas Marshall Soult’s brother has plenty of size and quality, and on appearances was the pick of the sale. Mr. George Robinson paid a similar price for a brown colt by Soult from the Cuirassier mare Roxana, a very handsome youngster. Memories of the good deeds of Golden Rose come into one’s mind as her youngster by Menschikoff was lead into the ring. There were no lack of admirers, judging by the bidding, but Koss Heaton stayed in the longest, and got the colt for 400 guineas. A colt by

Soult from Did realised a century, but the other lots went cheap. The particulars were as follows: — YEARLINGS. Gns. Brown colt, by Eton —Lustrous, Mr F. A powerful motor makes very light of the distance between Glenora and Cambria Parks, and in a quarter of an hour we were at the latter up-to-date establishment, which was found to be looking particularly well.. Alter partaking of refreshments and looking over the yearlings Mr Nolan called for a ring to be formed, and soon operations were started. It was soon evident that although the list of yearlings was only a short one this year owing to the difficulties incidental to reforming the stud; yet quality was by no means lacking. After a small filly by Bluejacket from Victoria had gone cheap, a very shapely colt by Eton from Peace was led in. Mr Handley, in getting him for 80 guineas, picked up a bargain if appearances go for anything. A filly by Hotchkiss from Cressy went cheaply to Mr. M. McLean, while a threequarter brother to Landlock looked a •bargain at 77 guineas. When the chestnut colt by Seaton Delaval from Harpist was led into the ring there was a hum of admiration, and there was some sharp bidding for his possession. Mr C. Dawson got him for 325 guineas, which did not look his value, for he is just the stamp of a Derby colt. A bay filly by Eton from Tournament did not attract much attention, but when a really beautiful bay colt by Soult- from Sprite made his appearance bids came thick and fast. At 400 guineas all dropped out but the owners of Master Delaval and Star Rose, who each had some Cup winnings to spend. The duel was a keen one, but when Mr. C. Matthews said 500 guineas there was no farther response, and this handsome youngster goes to Waitara. A brown colt by Menschikoff from St. Mary went to Mr. Cunningham, and a few other lots were then disposed of. The particulars were as follows:— YEARLINGS. Gns. Bay filly by Bluejacket—Victoria, Mr. R. Peacock •. . • . . . . 20 Bay colt by Eton—Peace, Mr Wm. Handley . . .... ~ 80 Brown filly by Hotchkiss —Cressy, Mr. M.
