TARANAKI.
-N. PLYMOUTH, Jan. 9.
R. Barlow has had two additions to his team recently in Pearlie by Royal Artillery—Margot, and Turkish Maid by Sylvia Park —Osmanie. Mr. Dan O’Brien returned home from the Auckland meeting last week. This veteran sportsman had hard luck in providing the runner-up for the N.Z. Cup and Auckland Cup in Multifid and Grenade.
E. Russell took Gyrene up to compete on the last day of the Ellerslie meeting, but the Cyrenian gelding could only get third in the six furlong race. Although Cyrene has proved himself a good one over five furlongs, he has not yet successfully negotiated a longer distance. A number of local sports journeyed to Opunake on New Year’s Day to assist at the annual meeting of the Opunake Racing Club. Although the fields were small, the club had a fairly successful fixture. The amount put through the totalisator showed an increase of £ll9 as compared with last year. The last race of the day was the O.R.C. Handicap, in which Lingerer was made favourite, but finished out of place. The field entered the straight together, here Lady Sylvia, who was the last away, forged ahead, and although challenged by Pangaroa, won by about three parts of a length, and returned a dividend of £6 7s, which was the best during the day. The Clipper won the Flying Handicap from Showman, and paid a dividend of £3 19s. The other winners at the meeting were: Hurdles, Hardwork; Electric, Rioro; Welter, Kiamere; New Year Stakes, Silvershell; Final, Somali.
Mr. C. Matthews, of Waitara, has purchased two youngsteirs at the Glenora and Cambria Park Sales, one a browncolt by Soult from Caller Ou, and the other a colt by Soult—Sprite. As tne price paid for the latter was 500 guineas, he should turn out to be something pretty good, and he will be a welcome addition to the district.
