OTAGO.
DUNEDIN, Jan. 9. At the Dunedin Saleyards on Saturday a' weeding out sale from the Hon. Geo. McLean’s stable was held, and three horses found new owners. Erskine, a three-year-old gelding by Lord Rosslyn—Tiara, went at 19 guineas; Hannattan. a three-year-old filly by Stepniak—Brisa sold at 33gns., and Amethyst, a good-looking son of Lord Rosslyn. was purchased by Mr. L. C. Hazlett at 22gns. Amethyst ricked his back when a youngster, and he stood training until fast work was put into him. He is to be used as a hack, but would be cheap at a century for stud purposes. Brisa can gallop fast for about three furlongs, but cannot stay, whilst Eskine showed some fair work until he ricked one of his joints recently. The Southland Racing Club held a successful meeting at the New Year, when there was some interesting racing. Some of the horsemanship exhibited was very dubious, and S.P. operations which made horses favourites that had only rough chances on paper did not tend to weaken one’s op’nion of the riding. Some of the riders were carpeted, and in one instance punishment was meted out. I Shaw, the rider of Bluestone, was disqualified for deliberate pulling, and R. Kennedy, a brother of the owner, who acted as the representative of the latter, was also disqualified for five years, whilst the owner, Mr. R. Kennedy, who was not present, was disqualified for one year. The Hon. G. McLean continues to make a pleasing progress towards a complete recovery from the serious operation which was recently performed upon him.
