BOWLING.

Despite the fact of five inches of rain having fallen during the week and the prospect of heavy greens, there were 60 players on the Auck land green, 48 on the Rocky Nook green, 56 on the Mount Eden green, 48 on the Carlton green, 72 on the Ponsonby green, 40 on the Devonport green and 34 on the Onehunga green on Saturday. I have not the figures for Mount Albert, Waitemata, and other clubs.

There was a great muster on the Ponsonby green on Saturday, seventytwo players taking part. A very exciting game was played for the Bartlett Buckles, the challengers Self, Hodgson, Watson, and Coutts (skip) —winning by a single point from the holders— Baddiley, Hemus, Gorman, and Quin (skip).

I "am told that the “ Fernleigh” boardinghouse is willing to PlaY a friendly match against any other boardinghouse in Auckland, or, failing that, against a team from any Auckland firm. Evidently bowling is m the air” down Grafton way.

A big score was put on up the Rocky Nook ground on Saturday, when Wakerley’s four beat Butlers by 42 to 11. The losers only scored on six heads.

The challengers —Fookes, Farmer, Fletcher, and McGregor —rather easily won the Challenge Buckles from the holders —Goldsmith, Badeley, Haresnape, and Murray on the Carlton green. The score at the close was 27 to 15 against the defenders.

The various competitions under the banner of the Rocky Nook Club have drawn good entries. The draw for the Champion Singles is as follows: — Cutler v. Jenkin, Hirst a bye, Scott v. McLeod, Wakerley v. Allen, Bryden a bye, Haselden v. Young, Tattersall v. Casey, Wheeler v. Ellisdon, Hodgson a bye, Fletcher, v. Butler, B. Kayes a bye, Clarke v. Dutton, Bouskill v. Bouskill, Rathbone a bye, Blakey a bye, Small v. Noton. The first round must be completed on or before Saturday, December 15.

The Mount Eden Club have commenced the first round of the championship matches, and as far as the games have gone, Surman has won a game against A. W. Jones by 21 to 17, Hudson against Walker by 21 to 17, and La Roche against Young by 21 to 16.

After a week’s rain the weather cleared up just in time to permit of bowling on Saturday, the result being that a very large number of players took part in their favourite pastime, all the greens presenting a very busy spectacle.

Entries for the Auckland Club’s matches closed on Saturday, the results being a very lengthy list.. For instance, there are just fifty in the champion pairs and thirty-eight in the handicap singles, while all the other events have filled we 11...

The’ first round of the Auckland Club’s championship has been drawn as follows: —Elliot, Forster, Steele, Craig, Dr. King, Culpan, Ledingham, Coombes (byes), Dean v. Brookes, Lyons v. Buttle, Gilmour v. McDougall, E. R. Davis v. Thornes, Lambert v. Holland, F. C. Jones v. Mennie, Jacobs v. Easton, Arnold v. Huddleston.

There were 109 nominations for M.C.C. single-handed championship tourney, won by the Dunedin bowler W. McLaren.

Two Auckland members of the New Zealand team in Australia, viz., Rankin and Bouskill, returned by the Zealandia on Monday after a very 'rough trip across the Tasman Sea.

The formal opening of the Remuera green has been postponed until next Saturday, when there should be a .fine muster of bowlers.

I notice among the Victorian reps, the name of B. H. Pascoe, of the Melbourne Club. The burly insurance .Tnan is well known in Auckland, where he proved himself to be a very fine player.

At the Mount Albert green the holders of the Ferndale Stars —-Mansell and Coyle—somewhat easily re-

pulsed the challengers (Impey and Wilson) by 21 to 14. ,

Although the official opening is not until next Saturday, play was in full swing on the Remuera green on Saturday, some forty players taking part.

The New Zealanders proved altogether too good for the Tasmanian reps., winning all the matches easily.
