WANGANUI.

WANGANUI, November 21.

By winning the Metropolitan Handicap and running second in the Canterbury Cup, Armistice credited Mr. G. F. Moore with £7OO at the Exhibition meeting.

Although many were prepared to see Armistice run well in the St. Andrew’s Handicap at Feilding, despite her impost of 9st, the daughter of Mahaki was withdrawn from her engagement in that event. She is almost sure to be seen at ElUerslie again at Cup time.

It transpires that The Lark lightened up very much while down South, and this accounts for the son of Nes-

tor’s disappointing form. Martello also went off, but St. Joe’s form was consistently good.

W. Price, who sustained a broken collarbone when riding Hemlock in the Ashley Handicap at the recent CJ.C. meeting, through his mount falling, is making satisfactory progress, and it is quite likely the Fordell jockey will be seen in the saddle again at the Feilding meeting. Letherin appears to be well in the St. Andrew’s Handicap with Bst 51b opposite his name, but as he is reported to have contracted influenza, it is quite possible he will not be in condition to do himself justice. One of Halberdier’s legs has been giving trouble again, and I think it is fairly safe to say that the last has been seen of the game son of Cuirassier on the racing track. Mr. B. T. Bennett, his owner, has in the meantime withdrawn him from work, and has given the gelding to Tommy Blinkhorn, a well-known local horseman, to hack about the roads. Providing the “ dicky” leg improves, it is of course possible the old fellow will be given a run later on. The same owner’s Waiuku colt, Waione, is also being hacked about the roads. Mr. W. R. Tuck, who had taken the colt under lease, recently returned him to the owner, as the son of Waiuku was suffering from an abscess, which rendered training impossible. The colt is now well again, and it should not be long before he is seen out under silk. He is a nicelooking, sound-legged colt, and some good judges are of opinion that he will turn out to be a fairly good one. It is sincerely to be hoped he will for the sake of his popular owner, mine host of the Masonic Hotel.

Evidently the first prizes in two of Tattersail’s sweeps on the Melbourne Cup have come to residents in this district, as the Audax Syndicate, care of A. E. Coulter, Raetihi (on the Wanganui River) are reported to have won £6OOO in one of the drawings, and on Saturday Mr. Alex. Strachan, a well-known and highly-respected Waverley farmer got word that he had drawn Poseidon, and in consequence will be £6OOO the richer when he receives his cheque. Some six years ago Mr. Strachan, with a friend, drew Dandy Dick in the £30,000 sweep on the Geelong Cup, in which that horse was first favourite. Dandy Dick was running well when another horse stumbled, and brought the favourite down, thus ruining Mr. Strachan’s chance of winning £15,000. Prior to the race Mr. Strachan had refused an offer of £6OOO for his chance. The programme for the Karioi Jockey Club’s annual hack meeting, which takes place on February 6, has been published. The bill of fare

includes Hurdles of 20sovs, Bracelet, trophy, value of lOsovs; Karioi Cup of 30sovs; Manson Memorial Stakes of 12sovs; Maiden Hurdles of 15sovs; Kaimanawa Handicap of 12sovs; and Flying of 20sovs. The Feilding meeting, which takes place on the 29th and 30th, should be a great success, judging by the excellent acceptances received. The following may run prominently in their respective engagements: — Flying: Splendid Idea and Gieam. Aorangi Hack Flat: d’Nil and Mataari. St. Andrew’s Handicap: Letherin and Intelligence (if started). Spring Hurdles: Handsome Rose and Pushful. Waituna Hack Hurdles: Mahoe and General Peel. Kiwitea Welter: Intelligence and Aeolus. Hack Flying: Pytchley and Lady Beresford.
