TEN MONTHS FOR SELLING BEER.

The reason why Henry Evans was sentenced to ten months imprisonment for selling beer, was because he had no license to do so, and that he had for some considerable time been carrying on his illegal business under most discreditable circumstances. He appeared in the local Police Court last Monday before Mr District Judge Kettle, and pleaded not guilty to four charges of unlicensed beerselling at his house off Grey Street. Evidence was given by Sergeant Hansen, Constable Kelly, and District-Con-stable Hamlin, of the sales of beer, sometimes at the house, and at another time at the solicitation of a tout in the street.

I he defendant’s plea was subsequently changed to one of guilty. Sub-Inspector Gordon asked for the maximum penalty. He said the accused had been carrying on this business for
