HAWKE’S BAY.

NAPIER, September 5.

The blood stock in these parts has been enriched during the past week by the following productions: At Longlands, Bluewater (St. Leger-Sapphire), a filly to Merriwee. At Karamu, Content (Dreadnought-Lullaby), a colt, and Trenalto (Trentdn-Mon tai to), a colt both to Birkenhead. At Mangatarata, Aulia (In-gomar-Sylvia), a bay filly, Miss Patriarch a bay filly, Hinenui. Te Po (CarlyonNamoaj, a chestnut colt, Scotia (St. George-Fair Nell), a brown colt, all to The Possible.

A number of thoroughbreds from Poranghau station were submitted for sale last Thursday at Waipukurau, when the following were quitted Brown gelding 4 years (Wonderland-Whisper), Mr Percy Wotton, 39 guineas; bay gelding 4 years (Wonderland-Mystic)j ' Mr R. Gooseman, 22 guineas; brown filly. 4 years (Wonderland —St.Cecilia), Mr W. Robinson, 32 guineas; bay gelding, 6 years (Chainlink —St.Cecilia),., Mr R. D. Knight, 17 guineas. A four-year-old gelding , by Wonderland —Searchlight, was passed in at 26 guineas. Wet Reef* found a new owner last week, Mt G. P. -Donnelly securing Gold Reef’s sop from. Mr J.. Munn. The Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club got well ahead of it in the last annual racing venture, the balance-sheet of the fixture showing a credit of Amphion (St. Leger— W atersprite) passed away last week. ’ The stallion was on his way to Wairoa, where he was to be at the services of breeders this term,

when he succumbed to internal troubles. Amphion was bred by the late Mr W. Rathbone, and when the deceased sportsman’s stud went up for dispensing in February, St. Leger’s son was knocked down to Mr A. Woods at 50 guineas. Amphion, at the time of his death, was owned by the local follower of the game, who goes a racing under the nom de plume of Mr Ralph Raynor. Verney Collelo has strengthened his team by the addition of Caneton, a four-year-old son of St. Prague and •. Rasulka. Price, one of the shining lights amongst the lightweight division of jockeys, arrived here last week under engagement to the Hon. J. D. Ormond. The first of Renown’s productions to be seen out studying are now under the tuition of R. Gooseman. The bunch consists of a brace of geldings out of Bastelle and Searchlight, and a filly who claims Whisper as her ma. They are an aristocratic lot, who, besides showing quality, know how to handle themselves, for I saw them step out last Saturday on the Hastings track, and they demonstrated that they are no slouches. Old Escalade, one of Mr S. H. Gollan’s brood mares, had to be destroyed last week as advanced age had rendered her useless for breeding purposes. Escalade was 23 years of age this foaling, so it can be seen that her stay on this mundane sphere had been of an extended nature. One of her daughters, Forlorn Hope, is at present an inmate of the mare’s paddock at Mangatarata. One of her sons, Waterford, by Jet D’Eau, proved more than useful, and Chicane by The Possible, it will be remembered, paid 12s when she won the two-year-old handicap at the Summer Meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club last season.

J. Cameron has a strong lot of workers in hand just now. His students are as follows: —Mataika, Ikon, Needlework, Ruat, Aumata, .Cast Chain, St. Albert, Blue River, and a four-year-old sister to Waiterere, The Shannon, la and Co. The bunch look well and hearty, and should, if properly placed, bring grist to the mill very shortly.

Arthur Goodwin, who up to a few months ago, filled the position of private trainer to Mr T.- H.'Lowry, has got. a five-year-old gelding by Captain Webb out of Countess in work for a Porangahau resident.

A five-year-old half-sister by The Possible to Sleepwell and Waipunehu, and a six-year-old full sister of Elang ' and Bonnie D’Eau have recently been taken in hand by F. Stowe.
