LAWN TENNIS.
The English championships have been proceeding during the week, and the great surprise of the tournament was the defeat by 3 sets to 2 of the redoubtable Doherty Bros, in the Doubles Championship by S. H.. Smith and F. Riseley. In 1902 the famous brothers went to America, and did not compete when the present winners carried off the championship. But for that one season the Dohertys would have held the championship since 1897. They know each other’s play to a nicety, and have always proved the toughest kind of proposition to tackle. * * * * Miss D. K. Douglas and A. F. Wilding beat Miss Thomson and A. W. Gore in the mixed doubles by 2 to 1. * * * * H. L. Doherty won the single championship, beating F. L. Riseley in the final by 3 sets to 1. * * * * Miss Douglas has won the Ladies’ Singles Championship, defeating the holder, the American champion, Miss Sutton, by 2 sets to love. * * * * The projected tour of Australia by an English team has been abandoned, as the Dohertys cannot come to the colonies.
