NEW ZEALAND WINE.
In the “New Zealand Times” recently a writer who had been visiting the vineyards in the Hawke’s Bay district gives some very interesting particulars of the vineyards in those parts; “The Hawke’s Bay district,” remarked the Government viticulturist, “is splendidly situated for the wine-making industry, and for the production of a fine table grape. Hence the selection of Arataki as an experimental station. Here you have seen to what an extent the experimental work is carried
on. From this season’s prospects, great results may be expected. There is no doubt that with care and skilful treatment wine could be produced here equal to any Australian, and certainly equal to much that is imported from older countries. Although the Hawke’s Bay win.® does not yet reach the maximum off perfection, still it should be able to displace a good deal of the wine now sent here from Australia, on account of the lightness arid delicacv of bouquet of the best local product. Comparing the production
of wine 'in this district and in Australia, it should be a lucrative undertaking here, for the climate is mild, the average rainfall is distributed more equally during the year and the soil is , richer, consequently the crop is larger. No doubt the establishment of this State farm will be of great utility to people who have embarked upon the industry, and those about to go in for,it.’.’
