BOWLING.

(By

“The Skip.”)

CARLTON WIN THE JUNIOR SHIELD. DEVONPORT WIN THE EASTER PAIRS. The beautiful weather existing during the Easter tournament changed on the Wednesday, and wind, accompanied with squalls, has continued throughout the week. On Saturday last the weather was cold, and showers felt at intervals during the afternoon. The rinks at the various greens were in good condition, but the elements prevented good play, and made the games anything but pleasant and enjoyable.

FINAL OF EASTER TOURNAMENT DOUBLES. The final of the Doubles commenced at Easter was played off on the Devonport green on Saturday last. The contestants were: —Harty and Eagleton (Devonport) and Davis and McGregor (Mount Eden). On the previous Tuesday the game was discontinued on account of the light failing. The scores then stood: Devonport 14, Mount Eden 7. It was thought that if McGregor could keep up his fine drawing there might be a chance of success, but although he himself drew up well, his leader failed to find position for him. Harty, for Devonport, was leading and placing in fine style, and left Eagleton little else to do but watch the opposing skip, and lift a shot that appeared too dangerous. In the closing part of the game, played on Saturday, the Devonport pair added 11 points (one head producing a 5) to their opponents’ 5, obtained by 1,1, 2, 1. The game ended in a win for Harty and Eagleton by 25 to 12. FINAL FIRST-YEAR PLAYERS’ SHIELD. The final of the above was played at Ponsonby between the Rocky Nook and Carlton juniors. The game was a hard-fought and well-contested one from start to finish. Rocky Nook started off with a good lead, the onlookers being convinced that the game was all over, for at the . 16th head the board showed: Rocky Nook 18, Carlton 8. The latter team seemed to have then shook, themselves up, and added 4,3, 2 on the 17th, 18th and 19th heads. On the 20th head Rocky Nook added 1, making their score 19 to 17. ; Thus, with one head to play, Carlton had to make 2 to tie or 3 to win, and this, to the delight of their older clubmates, they succeeded in doing, for by splendid drawing on the part of the team, they added a four, and thus obtained a victory by 2 points, amidst great excitement. ‘ The colts thoroughly deserved their win, for the big lead obtained by Rocky Nook at a critical time in the game was enough to break up old veterans of the pastime. The coaching received at Carlton has had good results, as each man steadily fought on and gradually wore their opponents down. The Carlton seniors are quite proud of the performance of their colts.

The following Trophy games were recorded at the different greens: — Auckland. Silver buckles match: Coombes, Pirie, Woodhead, Easton (skip), 20, v. James, Plummer, Craig, Lambert (skip), 19. Mount Eden. Club championship: C. C. Baker, 21, v. Brimblecombe, 19 (second game). Ponsonby. Club fours: Final —C. Dalton, T. C. Clarke, W. Jones, V. Langsford (skip), 23, v. W. Johnston, J. Johnson, Mitchell, 33; Glenister, Mason, 25, v. Johnson, Mitchell, 13. Remuera. Final for the Devereux medals: Spooner, Hood, Littlejohn, the Rev. Beatty (skip), 27, v. Scott, the Rev. King, Davis, Mahoney, Laxon (skip), 16. Final for the Murdoch silver challenge cup: Shaldrick, 22, v. Hegman, 21. Rocky Nook. Champion fours: Hall, Waddingham, Manson, Hodgson (skip), 20, v. Jenkin, Blakey, McDougall, Ellisdon

"(skip), 13; Rewcastle, Bouskill, jun., White, Butler, (skip), 19, v. Hirst, Page, Kayes, Bryden (skip), 18. Carlton. ‘ Champion singles: Holmes 20, Laurie 11. President’s (semi-final): Vaughan 20, Cahill 19. Waitemata. ‘ The second round of the Skeates cup was commenced, when S. S. Kinnaird, 21, beat F. Jackson, 15, and C-, Fraser, 33, beat E. Greenslade, 9. b. The following matches have yet to be played- —W. J. Smith v. Joshua Jackson, J. Peachey v. W. Newman, W. Bruce v. A. Greenslade, A. L. White a bye.

The Easter tournament held at Taranaki was a pronounced success. The clubs competing were: —Hawera, Eltham, New Plymouth, Stratford, Fitzroy, Manaia, and Opunake-Pihama combined. Hawera, New Plymouth, and Fitzroy tied with 5 wins 1 loss, and in the play off New Plymouth won. It is intended to make the event an annual fixture.

The subscription pairs on the Remuera green at Easter was won by Messrs. Baxter and Clerk (skip), the runners-up being Messrs. Hutchinson and Ruddock (skip). Eight pairs took part in the match. The final was a fine exhibition of the game, only one point separating the teams.

The exhibition of . bowls by the Carlton team in the final with Auckland was nothing like the form displayed by them in their previous matches throughout the tournament. There was a lack of that combination and assertiveness that characterises the play of : the Carlton men Certainly Kilgour was left tough tasks occasionally, and this being so, t i would have been better had he kept his third to the steady draw throughout the game instead of mixing his play. In Maguire he had a player who could have done any raking required from second position. There is. not the slightest doubt but what the best team won on the day, but I am convinced that the points would have been much closer, at the end of the game had there been less smashing from the Carlton third and skip. The Auckland team, after their fine display against Ponsonby, were considered to have a great chance. The fine leading of Mennie, the excellent wresting shots of Perritt (who was in grand form), coupled with the deadly drawing of Brookes and Dingle, quite nonplussed the Carlton combination. The Auckland Club have had a fine innings this season, winning the Inter-club and Pennant, and also annexing the Champion Fours.

On Saturday next the bachelors of the Carlton green are giving an “At Home,” the invites being issued to all married men of the club and their wives. In connection with the afternoon’s entertainment a match has been arranged, married v. single, four rinks a-side. The following are the teams: —

Married men: Heald, Sawbridge, Maguire, Holmes (skip); Legge, Haresnape, W. G. Fletcher, Laurie (skip); Murray, Kayll, Cahill, Curteis (skip); Rowe, Cottle, Ronayne, Thomson (skip). * Bachelors: Ratjen, Farmer, McKnighit, Anderson (skip); Cotterill, Winks, Otter, Wrathall (skip); Parson, Owen, White, Kilgour (skip); Ross, Jackson, Vaughan, Nixon (skip).

Here is a game worth recording for the smallest of the score registered in a 21 heads’ contest, played on the Auckland green on Saturday last: — Mewburn, Steele, Oliphant, Perrett (skip), 13, v. Robertson, Carminer, B. Buttle, A. H. Brookes (skip), 12. The winners scored 7 singles and two 3’s, and their opponents 12 singles. This is the smallest score in a full-rink contest that has yet come under my notice.

A close and exciting finish was also witnessed in the match for the silver buckles on the Auckland green between teams skipped by Easton and Lambert. After a fine exhibition of bowls, considering the state of the weather, the first-mentioned skip’s team won by one point.

ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

’"Third Man.”—Your letter is of too personal a nature for insertion in these columns. —(Skip). “ Sentiment.” —Perhaps if you write to “ Ditcher” he might be able to tell you who it was that was threatened

with “ blackball” at the Auckland Club’s green and had to be withdrawn. I was not aware that the marine club wanted to get rid of him. —(Skip). “ Justice.”—Such things as you mention are sure to occur if the committee- are not firm in fixing a time for matches. If, as you say, the player is a ’“.pointer,” I would advise you to bring the matter before the Match Committee of your club. —(Skip).
