TROTTNG.

AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING.

The Auckland Trotting Club was none too fortunate in the matter of weather on Saturday last, which was the opening day of the autumn meeting. There was a strong breeze in evidence, and the rain showers were all too frequent. Nevertheless there was a capital attendance of the public, all bent on seeing some good sport, in which expectation they were not disappointed. Mr. I. Hill was in the judge’s box, and Mr. C. O’Connor acted as starter, both officials giving no cause for cavilling. As is always the case with this club ,the general management left nothing to be desired, Mr. C. F. Mark and his committee having efficiently attended to everything. During the afternoon the sum of £3277 10s was passed through the totalisator, an increase of £ll3l 10s on the corresponding day of last year, when, however, the bookmakers were allowed on the course.

Proceedings opened with the Maiden Trot, one mile and a-half, for which there were eleven starters, a strong favourite being found in the Wilmington mare Miss Ruby. This proved the correct tip, for Miss Ruby soon went to the front, and holding her own with ease, won by a hundred yards from Lena G., with Miss Vola in third place. The Pony Trot, one mile and a-half, came next, and of the nine starters Plaintiff was a much better favourite than Huanui and Cleveland’s Pride. Huanui led all the way from Fibre, and a good race between the pair resulted in a ten yards’ victory for the former, with Mangonui forty yards further away. A lot of interest centred in the Autumn Handicap, six and a-half furlongs, and of the five runners punters came strongest for Forth, with Girton Girl also in good demand. The favourite made the early running, but at the back Solitary went to the front. With heads turned for home Forth and Manoeuvre went in chase of the leader, but they could never reach her, the daughter of Recluse winning by three lengths. The big event, the Stewards’ Handicap, two miles, followed, and for this six were harnessed up. Albertorious was made a redhot favourite at 5 to 1 on, nothing else being supported to any extent. Sir Robert was in front for most of the journey, but nearing home the favourite came fast, and finishing in good style won by fifteen yards, with Happy in third place fifty yards behind Sir Robert. A splendid field of fifteen turned out for the Middle-class Trot, one mile and a-half, and of this lot Ranana carried most investments. Snip was in front for more than half the journey, when Mangonui went to the front, and, never being troubled, won very easily by fifty yards from Eureka, with Timothy close up third. When the Cornwall Trot, one mile and a-half, came on for decision, punters instantly pounced upon Waitekauri as a fair thing. Colenso led all the way despite several bad breaks and came home twenty-five yards ahead of the favourite, but was distanced, and the race awarded to Waitekauri, with Lady Love second. Eight ponies carried silk in the Flying Handicap, six furlongs, Rapid, Kaipaki, and Lady Nannie being backed in that order. The last-named was quickest to begin, and leading all the way she won by two lengths from Orange and Blue, with Girton Girl a similar distance off third. The concluding event was the Electric Trot, one mile, and it was beginning to get dark when this event was run. J.P. was the most fancied of the fen runners. In the early stages Farewell 11. showed the way, but going down the back The Mooress went to the front, and holding her own in good style, won comfortably by ten yards from Eureka, with Colenso a similar distance off third. Only once before in the history of racing have the two great long-dis-tance races —the Melbourne Cup and Sydney Cup—of Australia been won in the same season by the progeny of the same sire—that was in 1904, when Lord Cardigan won both races for Positano —now True Blue stands as the. sire of Blue Spec and Noreen, though Carbine won both races for Musket, but not in the same season.

The French Government and the various racing societies in France are giving encouragement to trotting, which is greatly patronised, butchers taking a big hand in fostering the sport. Last year £93,534 was distributed, this sum including premiums to breeders and £14,425 received in entries and returned to owners of winners. On 372 tracks there were 519 meetings, 1411 races being run. Altogether, 1561 trotters took part, about 600 of the number being three-year-olds. There were 275 owners who won over £4O each, the highest sum being £6469. The champion trotter of the year was Cyrano.
