LAWN TENNIS

(By

“Volley.”)

Last Saturday all the clubs devoted to their respective tournament matches, there being no inter-club matches for that day. On Saturday next the last round but one of the inter-club will be played, the following clubs meeting: —Eden and Epsom v. Auckland, Onehunga v. Devonport, Parnell v. West End. The teams handed in so far are as follows: — Auckland: Men’s A —Hudson and Garden. B —Barry Keesing and McLean. Ladies’ A —Mrs. Churton and Miss Picken. B —Mrs. Goss and Mrs. Palethorpe. Combined A —T. R. Keesing and Miss Woodroffe. B — Falethorne and Miss Ring. * * * * The interprovincial meeting between Auckland and Taranaki has been definitely arranged for the 17th inst., and a really exciting contest is anticipated. The team to represent Auckland has been picked, and are as follows in order of merit: — Men’s Singles: J. P. Grossman, Dr. H. Keith, A. F. Billing, A. S. C. Brown, J. Paterson, S. Upton. Men’s Doubles: Grossman and Keith, Paterson and Upton, Billing and Brown. Ladies’ Singles: Miss D. Udy, Miss Gray, Miss S. Rice, Mrs. Cooper. Combined Doubles: Billing and Miss Udy, Keith and Miss Gray, Grossman and Miss Rice, Brown and Mrs. Cooper. Ladies’ Doubles: Misses Rice and Gray, Miss Udy and Mrs. Cooper. The selection committee had a hard task in deciding on the team, but the above will probably give as good account of themselves as any that could have been played. The matches will be played in the Eden and Epsom lawns, six courts being used in the morning and three in the afternoon. The Taranaki representative team will be given next week. * * * * The following matches have been played at Devonport during the week: — Handicap. Men’s Singes: Bartley received a bye from White. Men’s Doubles: A. Howarth and Cousins (owe 15 3-6) beat Redman and Standish (owe 15), 6 —4, 6 —4. Ladies’ Doubles (semi-final): Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Swan (owe 40) beat Miss M. Metcalfe and Miss Macindoe (owe 3-6 15), 5—6, 6—2, 6—4. Combined Doubles: Miss Duder and F. Brabant (receive 15) beat T. Macky and Miss D. Metcalfe (owe 15), 4—6, 6—4, 6—l. Championship Events. Men’s Doubles: F. Brabant and Redman beat T. Macky and Hall,

6 —2, B—6,8 —6, 6 —l. Young and Bartley beat Foster and S. H. Macky, 2 —6, 9—7, 12—10, 6—4.

The championship events have now commenced, and a very satisfactory entry has .been received —for the men’s singles 12 entries, for the men’s doubles six pairs. The singles are more open than they have been for some years, there being at least half-a-dozen competitors who stand a good chance. Judging by the brilliant way in which they defeated Macky and Hall on Saturday, Brabant and Redman should stand the best chance in the doubles.
