THE ELECTIONS

RESULTS OF THE POLLS. A ©BEAT VICTORY FOR THE government. The general elections took place yesterday and the result was somewhat of a surprise. It was generally expected that the Opposition would gain two or three seats, but so far from this proving the case the Government won all along the line, and now return with a far greater majority than formerly. Mr Poole is the only new representative for Auckland City, Messrs Kidd and Baume having represented it before. Mr Lawry narrowly won the Parnell seat, owing to the Opposition interests being divided. Mr Fowlds had a tough fight of it with Mr Farrell for Grey Lynn. The result would appear to give the Government 55 seats, the Opposition 15 seats, and the Independent party 6 seats. Much interest was taken in the Local Option poll, and the voting was heavy. Grey Lynn carried no-license, while the prominent Southern towns to adopt it were Oamaru and Invercargill. .Ashburton had a majority for restoration of license, but not sufficient to carry it. The list of candidates returned and the result of the Local Option poll was as follows: — AUCKLAND PROVINCE. CITY CENTRAL. Mr. A. Kidd 2614 Mr. L. J. Bagnall 1751 Mr. Aggers 392 Mr. S.
