CYCLING.
(By
“Petrol.”)
The Auckland Cycling Club opened the season on Saturday with a run to Cornwall Park. Time was when cyclists were a very numerous body in Auckland, but with the introduction of the trams their number has greatly decreased, so that Saturday's muster of a hundred and fifty was a very creditable one. Afternoon tea was partaken of at the Park, and a short programme gone through, the results being as follows:—The most original costume : J. Hawkins 1, A. Bennett 2. The most comical display: Messrs. Baker, Mackay, and Dadley, “ The Darktown Saveloy Band.” Best decorated lady’s bicycle: Miss Maberley 1. Best decorated gentleman’s b’cycle: Mr. R. Price 1. The shorts pi (.gramme included a hill-climbing contest, which was won by D. Ireland, with R. Maborley second, and C. Pipe’- third. There were 20 starters. A slow race w held, and after much amuse un it, was won by V. Sutherland. After a speech by VicePresident T H. Giles, a i eturn was made to town in good time.
