Sporting and Dramatic REVIEW AND Licensed Victuallers’ Gazette. With which is incorporated the Weekly Standard Thursday, October 12, 1905. TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB
It is always gratifying to learn that our leading race clubs are showing signs of vitality and steady progress, for among other things it indicates that there is but little truth in the parrot cry as to the deterioration and waning interest in matters appertaining to the sport of kings. In this connection it is instructive to read the report presented at the annual meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club. This stated that during the past racing season three meetings were held, extending over seven days, and stakes to the amount of £5200 were paid away. The profit and loss account showed that the receipts for the year were £B4lB 5s 9d, and the expenditure £7571 12s 6d, which left a surplus of £846 13s 3d. The totalisator investments amounted to £50,961, an increase of £9BO as compared with the previous year. The amount paid to the Government as totalisator tax was £764 8s sd. The balance-sheet presented was as follows : —Liabilities: Sundry secured and other creditors, £12,529 2s; balance July 31, 1904, £1997 17s lid; balance from profit and loss, £846 13s 3d: total, £15,373 13s 2d. Assets : Racecourse and othei- properties, buildings, plant, etc., £14,198 4s 8d; office furniture, £5O; sundry debtors, £709 17s; cash in bank, £304 10s 3d; cash in hand. £l2O Is 3d. The Chairman (Mr. R. Duder), in moving the adoption of the report and bal-ance-sheet, said that the profit for the year was £846 13s 3d, which was £725 9s 2d larger than for the previous year. The receipts had increased by £337 4s 2d, the various items (with the exception of nominations and acceptances) all showing an increase. Nominations and acceptances showed a falling-off of £53. The expenditure totalled £7571 12s 6dj which was £3BB 5s less than last year’ and was accounted for by the i eduction made in stakes. The amount paid for wages was higher, while the other items of expenditure remain much the same. The amount due to sundry creditors had been reduced by £344 14s 9d during the year. As the balance-sheet showed, the club’s credit balance at the bank was £304 10s 3d, and, in addition to thfc they had £l2O Is 3d cash in hand, which was a matter for congratulation, especially when it was considered that upon rnio e w OUS year they had an overdraft of £lB 18s and only £l7 6s 2d in hand It will thus be seen that the old-estab-lished club across the harbour experienced a very satisfactory season last year the financial results of which were good and the racing itself even better. Much of the progress achieved may be credited to the good work of Mr. Wynyard the secretary, and to the committee, the retiring members of which, viz., Messrs. R. S. Reynolds, W. D. Holgate, and E ri° r ?’x 1 Were 1 promptly r e-elected. We trust that the advance made will be more than maintained during the season just entered upon, and that when results come to be compared the figures will be found above eVen b6tter than those < J uoted
