WANGANUI.
Wanganui, August 15. Excellent nominations have been received for the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club’s meeting next week, and given a fine day the gathering should be very successful. Among the entrants for the jumping events are some well-known and proved fencers, such as Rapanui, Cairo, Haerlyn, Jonquil, Old Gun, Sammy, Flanagan, Katoa, and Janella, while Man in the. Moon, Stampede, First Lesson, and Fr.lr Play, fair performers on the flat, are aspirants for cross-country honours. The open hack events have filled well, such speedy customers as Sedge-
moor, Wangaehu, Land o’ Cakes, Kuroki, Clifton, Wild Duck, Snip, and Mereshot claiming engagements. The well-known local horseman George
Price, has been -spending a well-earned holiday in Sydney, and while there has been keeping his hand in by riding work regularly at the Randwick training track. George was offered a mount in the Epsom Handicap, but did not accept it, as he wishes to return to this colony in time for the National Meeting. Price will no doubt be in good fettle to ride Veneei" (Mahutonga’s brother) in the Winter Cup, which event the Auckland Cup winner annexed last year. At the Rangitikei point-to-point steeplechase, held recently, a half-brother to Chivalry called Playfair won the heavy weight hunters’ race. Mr. Douglas Gordon, in whose name the ex-champion Advance raced, has purchased a stallion in England for his private stud farm at Waikanae, called Kilcheran. The horse is well bred and comes from a splendid galloping family, being by Kilwarlin out of Emita. Kilwarlin is by Arbitrator—Hasty Girl, while Emita claims Galopin as her sire and Burgandy (Hermit —Doll) as her dam.
Mr. George Chamberlain has got Phaeton back again, and the son of Trenton —Sapnhire will be again at the service of breeders in this district. A son of Phaeton’s in Phaetonitis hass been in great demand for the National Steeples. The Waverley-trained Kohatu, who is looking remarkably well, has gone down to Christchurch to take part in the National fixture, and although the son of Turquoise—Fan may not be quite fast enough to win the big event, I shall not be surprised to hear of him annexing a race during the progress of the meeting. Shrapnel is another local candidate that should not return from Riccarton empty-handed, as Raynor has the son of The Workman—Element in splendid fettle, and he appears to be doing good work on the track at Christchurch.
W. O’Dyer has his charges, Valkyrie and Westward, looking nice and bright. The latter is a fine big chestnut gelding by Sou’-wester out of Coyle, and jumps splendidly, but no doubt he will take time to develop into a racer, as did his half-brother Fireworks. The son of Forester—Dolly Valkyrie has been nominated for the four-furlong flutter at the Hunt Club meeting.
J. Belcher is a constant attendant on the track with his string, comprising Cassiopea, Wild Duck, Sedgmoor, and the New Zealand Cup candidate' King’s Birthday (Sou’-wester —Vamoo), besides a couple of intending competitors at the hunt fixture. Allan Henderson has the Sou-’wester gelding Cloudy Morn in work, and the big fellow looks well, although it may be some time before he is in racing condition. Judging by appearances the son of Sou’-wester would make a fine hurdler.
The Waverley trio, Auratus, Iseult, and Romany King, are being well looked after at their quarters in the country, and appear to be benefiting from their well-earned spell. Between them they carried the popular green jacket of their owner to victory on numerous occasions during the recent racing esason.
