TARANAKI.
July. ll -. P. Johnson has only one inmate in his stables at present, but I hear that he is getting a Hawera horse placed in his charge. The present inmate of the stable is Kaharoa, who has been affected with a strain in his near foreleg just
above the fetlock. The leg fills a little at times, but the Sylvia Park gelding does not seem to suffer any inconvenience in his walking action. The gelding is wintering well, and will be put in work again in the spring. H. Eva is assisting Johnson in conducting the stables.
Trainers who have teams in hand at New Plymouth are R. Barlow (who was recently married), J. Thacker, and B. Russell.
The Opunake Coursing Club has cl ecided on July 19 as the datis for a meeting on Mr. Shove’s property at Pihama The club has made application to be registered with the North Island tion.
A great deal of interest is being taken in National betting throughout the district. A Wellington penciller is offering £4OO to 5s the Winter Cup and two Nationals treble, and has got backers going in trying to land the £4OO. George has given Durable a few jumps, and T understand the gelding has shaped fairly well at the game. Commonwealth is being spelled owing to a strain of one of the forelegs near the fetlock. After the Northern meeting the St. Leger- gelding was given a couple of gallops, but as he began to show signs of lameness Mr. J. O’Driscoll, the owner-trainer, had to restrict him to walking. It is bad luck for the owner, as he will miss the Wellington and National meetings with the gelding, who was in nick for hurdling.
