WANGANUI.

May 9. W. Mitchell took Roseal down to Blenheim, but the son of Handsome Jack —Rosalind failed to gain a place on either day. I understand Mitchell will take the horse home to the West Coast and indulge him with a spell. The severe attack of influenza Roseal contracted in the spring, evidently left its mark upon the gallant son of Handsome Jack, and the horse has never been the same since. It is to be sincerely hoped that he will benefit by the spell, and once more be able to give the public a taste of his galloping ability. George Chamberlain has a fine, racylooking colt in work called Zephrous, by Sou’-wester out of a St. Leger mare. His other charges, Hokio and Firelight, continue to do good, work on the track, while the Enchanter mare Matakoia has been turned out, being in foal to Euroclydon.

C. Birkett has a four-year-old filly by Westmere —Huiakama at Waverley, named Rosalinda, who gives promise of possessing a good turn of speed.. Westmere’s daughter was given a run in the Patea Easter Handicap, and shaped very well. Auratus did not pay up for the Hawke’s Bay Cup, as the owner of the Gold Reef —Pursestring gelding could not see why he should concede weight to Full Cry and others. George Laing journeyed down to Marlborough with Katerina, and landedthe stake on the opening day of the meeting. The win was well received here, as the genial George is very popular among local sports, and, in fact, all along this Coast, where he is regarded as one of the best cross-country riders we have. Laing is a very straightforward fellow, and it is indeed pleasing to notice that after a long run of bad luck, Dame Fortune is at last beginning to smile upon him. Alf. Lynch has not been having a very good time oh the West Coast with Sunmos. As the son of Somnus was not altogether himself while down there, he may not be long now in securing a- win. Betting was very brisk here over the Hawke’s Bay gathering, and the metalicians had anything but a good time. Sleepwell, Maniopoto, Marsellaise, Evening, and Veneer were all well supported on the first day, and Mystification, St. Bill, and Whakawehi found numerous followers on the concluding day. The St. Conon—Vivat gelding Hurrah, has changed hands, and the, big roan will in future be trained by Walter Raynor, who has now a good number of horses under his charge, including Shrapnel, Amaryllis, and Fisher Maid. W. Loyd, a well-known Light-weight, is now in Belcher’s stable. Loyd steered The Ganger to victory when the son of The Workman annexed the first race run on the new’ Palmerston racecourse. At Reefton and Hokitika the recent meetings were very successful, both as regards totalisator returns and fields. The racing at each place was excellent, and close finishes were witnessed in nearly every race, and these successes are in a great measure due to the good work done by the handicappers. Mr G. Morse, our local weight-adjuster, declared the weights for Reefton, and Mr Pollock, who scored such a success at Masterton recently, framed the handicaps for Hokitika. J. Dunn has taken Irish Rifle, Shrapnel’s promising half-brother, up again, and the son of Musketry—Element will now appear on the krect cards as a gelding. Dunn also has a fine-looking half-sister to The Ganger, by Musketry out of Vigorous, • under his charge. The filly has had the name of Vigorous-lire claimed for her.

Mr A. Leicester, a well-known patron of Fred Tilley’s stable, has decided to give up racing. The roan mare Midia, who has some excellent hurdle performances to her credit, has been purchased by Tilley, while Explode will in future run in the colours of Mr A. Ellis, who has bought the big bay son of St. Hippo. The high-priced son of Hotchkiss —Rose of Wellington, Martello, has been leased to the sportsman who races under the nom-de-course of “Wire Tokena.” Explode pulled up lame after the recent Feilding Meeting, and may not be seen out for some time again. Maniopoto carried top-weight in the Hawke’s Bay Cup, and won easily in good time. The sou of Soult was heavily supported here, and his victory was well received. I understand it is the intention of his owners to put the Soult Colt into Prosser’s hands to undergo a preparation for Mother side. Wanganui will be represented at the Egmont Meeting by Shrapnel, St. Lyra, King’s Birthday, Blessbok, Lauree, Hokio, Clifton, Ben More, Firelight, Fisher Maid, Kuroki, and Two Bob. Mr G. Morse’s adjustments for the local meeting are due next Saturday, and are being looked forward to with great interest by those who have already picked doubles. Maniopoto, for the Connolly, has been coupled with nearly everything in the Boyough Stakes.
