OTAGO.

Dunedin, Nay 9. The North Gtago Jockey Club have received excellent nominations for their Winter Meeting, and the quality of the horses engaged in the principal events is distinctly above the average. At a meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, held last week, the president stated that the appeal in connection with Donovan’s disqualification had been adjourned in order to call further evidence, and the result would probably be known in a few days. The South Canterbury Jockey Club spent ,£423 in improvements on_ its course this season. The club made a profit of £167 over its recent meeting. Long Tom, who won the Place Handicap, at Randwick, and put up an Australian record of 2min 4sec for twelve furlongs, and was subsequently sold at 1000 guineas, is a half-brother by Projectile to Crossfire, one of Mr J. F. Reid’s Elders lie stud matrons.

At the last of the Elderslie yearlings sale Mr G. G. Stead purchased a Stepniak—Crossfire filly at 130 guineas. Convoy’s saddle slipped during the race for the great Autumn Handicap, and gave McCombe a somewhat dangerous ride, whilst it accounts for the way in which the gelding appeared to take charge as he ran along the back of the course.

There is a strong probability that the Dunedin J.C. will alter the dates of

their Winter Meeting from J une 2) and 3 to June 3 and 5, in order to nave the second day of the meeting on the Monday, which is to be the public holiday. The welLknown Southern sportsman, Mr J. Miller, is sending a numper of his horses up for auction on the 19 th at Otautau, and amongst these are a number of his North Island purchase, including the following lot: —Mediation (Leinster —Reflection), I'ohfle (Casket— Parvula), Order ley (The Ullicer —Sanra). Shield (Captain Webb —Cartouche;, *. fl'ce Girl (The Officer —Tomboy), Order (The Officer —Spot), and several others. J. McGuire, who was jijiired at the last Plumpton Meeting, is expected to be able to leave the Hospital in the course of a few days. Red Gauntlet and Brighton are both doing mild exercise after a spell. The well-known trotters, Lieutenant J. and General Pet, go under the hammer here on Saturday.

The Tuapeka Jockey Club, whose progress has been greatly hampered by want of a decent track, has decided to purchase a ground for a new course, which will be ready for next season. The well-known American-bred trotting mare Norice was badly injured last week owing to getting entangled in a wire fence.
