TROTTING.

AUCKLAND TKOTTING CLUB’S AUTUMN MEETING.

An event to which lovers of the trotting horse are looking forward to with much interest is the Autumn Meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club, which will commence next Saturday and be continued on Wednesday, and brought to a conclusion on the following Saturday. Instead of Alexandra Park the venue this time will be the 'I akapuna racecourse, and at the close of the meeting it is safe to assume that many will be found regretting that all the fixtures do not take place on the seaside course. The programme and list of acceptors shows that some very excellent sport is promised, and there is every reason to believe that some capital exhibitions of trotting should be shown. ’Those always popular items, the pony races, also give promise of providing some exciting finishes. Ihe course is in good order, and as Air C. F. ATark, the energetic secretary, has been for some time perfecting his arrangements for the meeting it goes without saying that these will be found entirely satisfactory. The acceptances not having closed at the time of writing, it is impossible to make any selections as to likely winners. If the weather proves favourable there is every reason to expect a large attendance of the public, and to carry them over ,to Devonport the Ferry Company will run a number of extra steamers. The following are the handicaps :— FIRST DAY

There can be no doubt whatever that a publication which should be in the hands of every trotting man is the second volume of the Register for Trotting Horses, that is to say, for horses that have been registered with the New Zealand Trotting Association to the end of the season ended 1904. To secretaries of clubs and owners the book is particularly valuable, as it has been very carefully compiled and contains a great deal of information concerning our trotters. Applications for the same should be sent to Mr Norris, secretary N.Z. Trotting Association. Christchurch.

When Sidney Dillon was sold for $9OOO at the “Old Glory” sale last November several horsemen standing by the ring side were heard to say that the sire of the sensational Lou Dillon was practically stolen. Subsequent events would seem to corroborate this statement at least to the extent of showing that the price realised for the horse was but a fraction of his value. He reached his new home at Indianapolis about December I, and a few days afterwards his stud book for 1905 was opened, and his service fee placed at •' I/O. In such high esteem did the breeders of the Middle West hold this sire of extreme speed that they fairly deluged the sire’s owner with their applications, and before he had been quartered in his new home fi( days the book of Sidney Dillon —which was limited to 60 mares—had been filled, and his owner had gone South, partly for his healtlT and partly to escape the annoyance caused by belated breeders begging for opportunities to book mares. As 60 mares at $l5O each will just pay the $9OOO which Sidney Dillon cost, it is not difficult to determine whether or not this horse, like many others, was practically given awav.—“Rider and Driver.”

The once champion pacer, Robert J., died in America at the beginning of last month. He was foaled in 1888, and was bred by R. J. C. Walker, of Williamsport Pa. Robert J.’s first great rare was at Fleetwood Park, N.Y., where he met and defeated in a good field C. J. Hamlin's Glendennis in a red-hot battle of live heats. Glendennis died shortly after the race, and Mr Hamlin bought Robert J. for 5000dol. In the hands of that clever reinsman, Geers, he was almost invincible, and he closed the season with a record of 2.9 J. As a five-year-old, while he did not win the championship, he met and defeated such champions as Mascot and Flying Jib, and closed the season with a record of 2.5--J. In 1894 he was invincible. He met all-comers and defeated them easily, and finally in a race against time passed under the wire in 3.1'4, 21sec faster than the previous champion record. This record was made at Terre Haute, September 14, 1894. Later he was purchased by Mr Tewksbury, who also bought John R. Gentry. 2.01, the pair in 1897 winning the teampacing championship with a record of 2.8.
