ATHLETICS.
Although the N.S.W.. A.A.A. would like to decide the next Australasian Chanypionship meeting on the t>jdnLy Cricket Ground on November 11 and lb, I hardly thinx it likely the ground will be availaole on those dates on account of cricket fixtures (writes “rrodigal” in the “Referee”). September 3U and October 2 are dates upon which the ground may be available, but October 2 is Eight-hour Day, and the Association would not care to clash with the big Labour carnival, especially as the Eight-hour Day people always treat the Association handsomely. Furthermore, September 30 and October 2 might not be a very suitable time of the year for some of the other Associations, especially New Zealand, victoria, and Tasmania. I mention Tasmania because we are hopeful that the 'lasmanian A.A.A. will be represented at the next Australasian meeting. If November 11. and 13 have to be adhered to, it will probably mean that the meeting will have to be decided on another ground, say, the Lniversity Otal.
After a highly successful season in Sydney, George Hackenschmidt, champion Graeco-Roman wrestler of the world, has gone to Melbourne intent upon making a match with the Hindu, But tan Singh, in the latter’s favourite style, catch-as-catch-can.
Cable messages from London during the week confirm the news received at this end Gat Alfred Shrubb, England’s famous long-distance runner, and A. F. Duffey, America’s sprint champion and 100yds world’s record-holder, are coming’ out to the colonies at the invitation of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Shrubb is on his way out by the Ortona, while Duffey will come via San Francisco. Unfortunately Morton does not appear to be coming.
