CANTERBURY.

Christchurch, December 20. Mr Stead's powerful team for the Auckland Summer Meeting- is now safely quartered at Ellerslie. Nightfall, Sungod, Delaware, and Noctuiform are looked upon as certainties for any classic events they start in, while Savoury, according to some people, cannot lose the Railway Handicap. Hewitt, who is in great form at present, is looking forward to beating his Canterbury record of fourteen wins put up at the last Cup Meeting. Magnificent, Cora 1 !, Ability, and Quickfire* were taken over to the est Coast on Monday in charge of H. Donovan and 11 . Brown. T. Sheehan also left with his mare Antigone, and T. O’Brien went over with Nor'-wester. Sir Geo. Clifford will be represented at the Manawatu Meeting by Cannie Chiel, Tessera, and Chryesis. H. Cutts will have charge of the trio. Beau Seaton and Czarevna will both take part at the Auckland Meeting, but after their poor displays at the Christchurch Meeting last week I do not expect to see them score in better company they are bound to meet at Ellerslie. Zealous, Lolah, Terrapin, Hilarity, Delarey. King’s Guest, and Lydia have all gone to Dunedin. Catherine Gordon, the pony Reduction, Beau Seaton, and Czarevna left for Auckland on Saturday. Slow Tom had a bad fall one day last week and will not start at the Dunedin Meeting. Wet Blanket. Guard of Honor and Ronga have left for Kaikoura, where the local club will hold its annual. races on Boxing Day : all totalisator tickets will be ten shillings.

Hewitt has ridden twenty-one winners at the past two race meetings held in Christchurch, a truly remarkable record. Secret Society has quite lost the form he displayed in the early spring, and his two efforts at the Christchurch Meeting cost his supporters a lot of money. The Australian-bred colt Handel, by Medallion—Choir Girl, has scored his first win at the Christchurch Meeting. This colt was sent over from Australia in the winter, having been purchased by Mr G. Palmer.

Mr J. E. Henrys witnessed the racing during both days of the C hristchurch Club’s Summer Meeting. Starshoot is being strongly supported for the Auckland Cup in doubles with Savoury, Kremlin and Crichton.
