Oblivion, Grand Rapids, Onewa, Malakoff, Zetland and Lady Lillian have received solid support for the New Zealand Cup during the past week. The Southland horses, Andy Regan and Bealey, were recently placed under the hammer at Invercargill, but failed to find new owners.

The Victorian-bred gelding, Victor 11., goes into R. Ellis’s stable this week to be trained for future engagements.

The Stepniak horse Nihilist is to be taken to Melbourne next week and placed under the hammer there. Such a well-performed and beautifully-bred horse should command a readv sale.

Mr R. Sievier’s action for slander against Sir Janies Duke was based on the grounds that the latter accused him of being a cardsharper, a thief, a murderer, and of having caused Sceptre to be pulled in the Derby. It appears that Sievier went into the Raleigh Club, of which he was not a member, and Sir James Duke being of opinion that a Major Sellar was responsible, called the latter into another room, and was alleged to have said to him : “ You have no right to bring him into ' the club. You know what a character this man has. You know he was a murderer, a card-sharper, and a thief. . A man was found murdered under his window in Australia, and it was reported that Sievier murdered him. I myself saw him thrown from a ! oat into the water for cheating at cards. I unmasked him before the stewards of ihe Jockey Club and had him turned out of the Jockey Club Stand at Newmarket. He was also turned out of Boodle’s Club. I am surprised you should know a man like that.” The major denied bringing Sievier into the Club, and subsequently repeated to the latter Sir James Duke’s remarks.
