Christchurch, May 11. The Canterbury Jockey Club will celebrate its jubilee next year, and in order to mark the occasion the club intends to give a large increase in stake money. Starting oil with the Grand National Meeting, the Grand National Steeplechase stake has been increased to £lOOO, while the value of the National Hurdle Race will be £7OO. The next New Zealand Cup is t<.‘ be worth £2OOO, the winner receiving £l5OO, the second horse £3OO, and the third £2OO. It will cost an owner £2O in entrance fees, etc., to start a horse ir. the Cup, and there should be a record entry. Nominations tor the Cup are duo on June 6. Slow Tom, who will be ridden by A. Hall in his important engagement at Auckland, was sent over the big fences last week. He jumped the brush fences and sod wall in taking style, and may be worth backing for Jthe Great Northern Steeplechase. Bayonet, who will be hunted with the hounds, was given some exercise over the hurdles, and he jumped fairly well. It Is intended to qualify Narcissus for the Hunlti’s Hurdle Races. The Ashburton County Club’s Autumn Meeting will start to-morrow. The following arc likely winners Long Beach Hack : Eurus. Ashburton Handicap : Clanburn. Disposal Handicap : Miss Hamilton. Fairfield High-Weight : Conal or Zealous. Grove Farm Handicap : Lady Lillian or Melrose. Galloway : Telemina.
