TROTTING.

OTAHUHU TROTTING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING. The three days' fixture of the Otahuhu Trotting Club was brought to a conclusion on Saturday, under very pleasant circumstances as regards the weather. A goodly crowd was present, and speculation proved fairly Frisk, the sum of £2283 10s going through the machine, which made the total for the meeting the satisfactory one of £6554. Proceedings were opened with the President’s Trot, one mile, for which the oddly-named Kidney Pai was served up piping hot. The favourite made most of the running, and holding his own 1 up the straight won by six yards from Bell Car, who was about three yards ahead of Carbolic.

Only three starters went to the post for the Second Harness Trot, two miles, and there was very little betting, Snip being made favourite. This gelding, with the decidedly useful handicap of 4osec, was never caught, although Duke C. reduced the huge gap separating them at the start to a dozen yards at the judge’s box.

Of the five runners in the Welcome Stakes, six furlongs, Gladys Rose was most fancied, although there was no lack of backers for the consistent Annoyed. The latter got a flying start of some lengths, and as despite her having the weight of list 41b, she made matters very willing, nothing could get alongside, the daughter of Regel winning by two lengths from Whawhai, who just beat Gladys Rose. Three Kings was a pronounced order t for the Criterion Trot, two miles. The 'good thing duly came off for the Albert Victor gelding won easing up by fully a dozen lengths from- Black Diamond, while Belladonna was an indifferent third.

In the Second Pony Trot, Kitty was backed as though there was nothing else in the race. This was an incorrect solution of the problem, for the favourite could get no nearer than third, the winner turning up in Mr Baker’s mare Maidee, who won by some ten yards from Fibre, with the favourite third. Waitekauri was generally supposed to be the right pea for the March Trot, one and a half-miles. It was yet another instance .of the favourite striking her colours to an outsider. The finish was a remarkably close one, Victor Hugo just winning from Waitekauri and Albert Victor, who filled the places. For the Dash Trot, one mile, the Kir Harold gelding Baxter was made a screaming favourite, a very correct forecast, for he trotted very consistently throughout, winning comfortably ’by ten yards from Donnizetti, with Nat Gould about the same distance further back.

The meeting was brought to a close . with the Manuk.au Handicap, a half-mile flutter for the pony brigade. Vulpine and Inspiration carried the bulk of the money, but there were a good many prepared to see Cuisine win, as she did by half a length from Garnet, who had Inspiration on her quarters. The death is. announced of the New South Wales champion trotting sire Prince Harold, the property of Mr Frank Morris, <>f Summer Hill. Prince Harold at one time held the two miles trotting championship of Australia (4min 57-teec), and four years running took the "champion prize at the Royal Agricultural Society’s show. He was by Childe Harold from' Queen of Trumps, and had sired many winners.

It is an admitted fact that most horsemen can talk little but horse. In fact, it is because of this, that ladies shy at the cult somewhat, away from the track (says an American paper). Which may‘be severe but true! Lady Constance Mackenzie was expected to arrive at Alice, lexas, at the beginning of this year to look over the Santa Gertrude ranche. The despatch was sent to R. J. Kleburg, but he was absent, and the boss of the Santa Gertrude received the wire which came from a neighbouring ranche. The boss conclude ] Lady Constance Mackenzie was a high-class' filly that (Mr Kleburg had secured, ami telephoned. the local delivery man to expect her. and as she was a high-bred animal, to take special care of her until removed to ranche headquarters, c o when Lady Constance arrived she found g-i'ooms, blttnkets. and decorated box stall awaiting her. At which, being an enthusiastic and discriminating horsewoman, she was greatly amused.
