BOWLING.
The tourney for the championship of Australia, which xvas concluded on the M.C.C. Ground on Saturday, resulted in a highly meritorious victory for E. Slatter, of Albert Park, who was runner-up for the prize last season (says “ The Leader ”). The winner played very consistently throughout. In the first match he met C. Wood, and won easily. Then he polished off R. Ovens, of Moonee Ponds. In the third round he beat W. Hoxx-e, of Port Melbourne, by 5, and in the fourth round R. Woods, of the Victoria Club, fell to him by 9 points. The next to succumb was B. Hansen, of M.C.C., who was leading Slatter close to the finish of the game, but the latter came out and won on the post by & points. In the final game Basto was never at home. The winner, who has played for Albert Park for many years, has always been a bowler of prominence. Frequently he has 'carried off the championship of his club, and on several occasions has represented Victoria in interstate matches. Last Easter he captained a Victorian rink in Sydney, but while he failed in the harbour city, it was not due to Slatter’s own play for his comrades did not support him to any appreciable extent.
The entries for the Mount Eden Club s trophies have been very large, viz., 13 rinks for the prize fours, 32 singles shampionship, 40 handicap singles (1), 48 handicap singles (2), 47 handicap singles (Waite and Wrathall’s table , 48 prizepairs, 24 veterans’ handicap singles. It is the intention of the committee to have aU 1 matches played to time, and no clemency will be extended to laggards. This is a very good rule indeed, and might well be followed by other clubs l . Nothing is soirritating as the needless dragging out of a tournament through the laziness of some of the competitors. If these latter cannot play their matches xvithin the time allowed then their names should be promptly deleted from the list without, fear or favour.
