ATHLETICS.

According to a Southern exchange the secretary of the Axemen’s Carnival, to be held in Invercargill in 1902, has received a commuDtication from a leading axe and saw manufacturing firm in the United States, saying,:—“We are willing to spend £4O if you think we could get men in training for this amount. If you feel that we can win with the expenditure of this amount, will you Het us know in time, so that we can make up special saws for the occasion!.” Another American firm, writing, to the secretary on the same subject, says it noted with pleasure the fact thut a rival firm 'was considerably exercised over the success of its saws at the Easter Carnival, and it was odd to think that they could win better by having a man from America to go to New Zealand. This firm went on to sjay that lit would “stick to the game” as long as its rivals, and asked what it must do to be “in shape” for the next carnival.

Referring to the recent visit to Sydney of the Queensland athletic enthusiast, Mr R. H. Croll, “Prodigal” in the Sydney “Referee” has the following:—By the way, Mr Croll very kindly brought back my long-lost dliscus, which had been peacefully resting in Mr W. Briggs’ office in Melbourne for several years. Made in New York by Messrs A. G. Spalding Bros., it was used several times in Sydney, and then was borrowed (for the purpose of being copied) by the Q.A.A.A. On its return it was despatched to Melbourne for a like purpose, and all trace of it lost), so far as I was concerned, until Mr Croll brought it to the “Referee” office. A year or two ago a request came from New Zealand for the loan of the implement. aiJd dt will be forwarded (to Auckland at the first ope portunity, and thence it can be .sent to and from Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, if so desired. The discus weighs 4?,]b.

Mr W. G. Atack has been appointed to represent the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association as a vice-president of the Association Council.
