CANTERBURY.
Christchurch, November 17
At the thoroughbred sales held during Cup week the top price was realised by a chestnut colt by Stepniak from Hermosa, Mr G. G. Stead being the purchaser at 425 guineas. When an owner pays big prices for his racing stock and buys largely in all markets he deserves any success he achieves on the race track. J. Prosser had bad luck io lose the services of Boris at the Cup meeting. The colt contracted a bad cold a few days before the meeting. Sea Lion did not start in a race, the weights being considered toosevere. Gold Crown ran very consistently throughout the meeting, but Ghoorka might have performed better. Achilles was again the bright star of the Porirua stable. He showed his wellknown brilliancy in the two Cups, New Zealand and Jubilee.
Lavalette, who was responsible for some great gallops before the Cup, failed to score a place in any of his races. This son of Seaoton Delaval has the reputation of being a brilliant track horse. He was sold last week for 110 guineas, R. J. Mason being- the purchaser. I hear the horse will go over to the West Coast.
