CANTERBURY.

Christchurch, October 6. Roseal has come into favour for the New Zealand Cup during the past week. The Handsome Jack colt is now quoted at fourteen to one. Kohupapa was scratched for the Cup at 12.45 p.m., on Friday last, and Pearl Diver was withdrawn from the Cup at 5.50 p.m., on September 29. Mr Stead, who has carried off the Auckland Cup two years in suctesMon, has nominated Grand Rapids and Royal Flumes for this year’s Cup. Machine Gun and Bagpipes are the Yaldhurst lepresentatipes in the Railway Handicap. Punters are asking whether Mr Stead can win three Auckland Cu’s without a break. Windwhistle was well supported in her two races at Vvanganui. Regulation must have come on a lot since last season. This mare was only considered a moderate performer, but after her display at Wanganui, she must take higher rank. It is pleasing to see such a popular horse-owner as Sir George Clifford scor ing in classic events. With the Bill of Portland colt Treadmill, Sir George should be successful in having his name enrolled as winner of richer classic races later in the season. Although Treadmill is sired by an Australian, his dam is a New Zealander, being by that great racehorse Maxim. Sirius has returned to Dunedin. He has been racing in Canterbury since the Grand National Meeting, but has qui e failed to show a"/ term. I think he can be counted out of '.he New Zealand Cup. Narcasius wen a double at the Ohaka Meeting in good style, beating some well-perfcrn ed animals each time. I hear that the Seaton Delaval colt Silkworm, who will represent Mr Stead in the Hastings Stakes, is a smart youn’Ster. One of the reasons he was sent North was that he was a little mere forward than some of the other two-year-olds at Yaldhurst. This is what the man in the street says, and that individual generally knows something. „ Secret Society has received further support for the New Zealand Cup, and present indications point to this horse starting in the big race. ..... Since his arrival at Riccarton Wainki has done very little work. The news that he contracted a bad cold on the way from Auckland will not be pleasant reading to the backers of the son of Soult for the New Zealand Cup. Wairiki’s trainer makes light of the ailment because the horse had done a lot of hard solid work before leaving Auckland, and a week’s rest is not likely, according to McHugh,, to put Wairiki back much. Mr Bradley's horse looks well to the eye, and we all hope he will be fit to take his part in the Cup next month. White Rose, who accompanied Wairiki, has been doing easy work, and is evidently well forward. Before starting in the Wanganui Stakes Handicap money was in the market for Shrapnel for the New Zealand Cup, and a fair amount was booked at hundreds to twelve. After The Workman’s son failed to get a place in the above race he eased in price for the New Zealand Cup. The three-year-old filly Nautdloid, by Musketry—Nautilus, won the Flying Handicap, at Ohoka, in a style that suggested that she will soon win again. Huku is again running in flat races, and took part in the Ohoka Handicap, but failed to get a place. In this race Narcissus (7.3) beat Stepdancer (7.13) by a length and a-half, Hypnotist (7.9) beingthird. Stepdancer was a warm favourite, and Narcissus returned his supporters £lO 6s for each £1 invested ; not a bad price in a five horse race. .
