THE NEW ZEALZND AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP.
The annual tournament to decide the Amateur Golf Championship of the Colony has been proceeding during the week at Napier, and the various matches have aroused very keen interest. The entry was a record one, and some excellent play was shown in some of the rounds. The particulars of the rounds were as follows .-— New Zealand Amateur Championship.— First round : Wood beat Gold, Young a bye, K. Duncan beat Strong, Hutchinson beat Borthwick, A. Duncan beat Fisher. J. A. Burt beat Leckie, Nicolaus- beat J. I. Cato, Kawhi beat Higginson, Munro beat Stronach, Mac Ewan beat H. Gil lies, C. Gore a bye, H. Fitzherbert beat Sains, C. Cato a bye, Armstrong beat Dr. Coates, Dimock beat Beatson, Gillies beat E. Turner, J. C. Bidwill beat Dr. Reid, M. Mason beat Cotterill, Heather a bye. Darling beat Wi Haora, Peel beat A. Fourth round : Nicolaus beat K. Duncan ; McEwan beat Fitzherbert ; C. Gillies teat H. Peacock ; K. Tareha beat Hooper. Fifth round : Nicolaus beat McEwan ; Tareha beat Gillies. FINAL. TAREHA BEAT NICOLAUS. Kuropo Tareha, the winner of the Championship, is a young chief of the Ngati Kahungunu tribe, and was an officer in the contingent that visited England at the time of the Queen’s Jubilee. He is the best plaver in the Hawke’s Bav Club. * * * * The council has decided the next tournament is to be held in Wellington. * * ■ * * In the match in the semi-final on Monday, between C. E. S. Gillies and Tareha, the Aucklander should have won, but with the game virtually in haiad played wretchedly the last three holes, and lost the match by a single stroke. * * * * Palmerston (371) won the inter-club teams match from Auckland (372) by a single stroke. An accident nearly lost the Northerners the match, Gillies’ caddie knocking the ball away when it was within three inches of the hole. Dunedin was fourth, Wellington fifth, Napier sixth, and Christchurch last. * ❖ * The Auckland champion, J. Hooper, was very easily beaten by Tareha in the fourth round of the championship, being right off his game. The Northerner was defeated by no less than six up and five to play. * * * * Arthur Duncan won the Hawke’s Bay Championship, as was generally expected would be the case, with a total score of 167 for the two rounds. His lead of seven in the first round won him the match, for in the second round H. Gillies was in brillianrt form, beating Duncan by four. The Aucklander’s round in 79 was a record for the links.
