BILLIARDS
The Amateur Championship of New South Wales will be commenced on Jun® 16, at the National Sporting Club, Sydney. The prize is a Challenge Cup, at present held by Mr J. B. Belfield, and a ten guinea trophy. The definition of an amateur, which has been adopted by tte State, is as follows :—An amateur billiard player shall be one who, from January 1, 1901, has not (1) played for gate money ; (2) a money prize ; (3) accepted prize money in a tournament for which a trophy and cash is offered ; (4) followed the game as a means of livelihood ; (s) or who t<as not entered nor competes against a, professional for a prize of any description or in exhibition. Notwithstanding anything contained in the foregoing, it is provided always that BO billiard player should be considered as as amateur who has been employed as a billiard marker since January 1, 1896.
Most of the amateur clubs in Auckland are now holding tournaments. Those at the Commercial Travellers’ Club and the Amateur Sports Club have been productive of some most exciting matches.
Most of the big breaks made in England this season have been strung together by E. Diggle. His latest effort! against Dawson was a beautiful 527. W. Cook, son of the old champion, is also coming well to the fore. In a game for the benefit of Lloyd, the veteran Welsh champion, he made a break of 476—0 r cm® more than Fred. Weiss’ best record.
Entries for the tournament promoted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron close on Saturday evening next. Should the number of entries warrant it the players will be divided into two classes.
H. W. Stevenson has arrived in Freemantle, anil will remain for a fortnight. He will put in a four weeks’ season im Melbourne, and open in Sydney early in July.
