ATHLETICS

Given fine weather, the Inter-University sports, to be held in the Domain on Easter Monday, promise to be of a most interesting nature. It is almost a pity that the holiday was chosen as the day for holding them, as the fixture will clash with the big meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, as well as innumerable other counter-attractions, and consequently hundreds who would have liked to be present will be unavoidably absent. If the meeting had taken place on the following Saturday I feel certain that the number of 1 spectators would have been very large indeed. Even as it is there should be a good gathering, and the racing is likely to prove very exciting. The various centres are sending up to Auckland their very, hottest teams, and the local men will have to be at their best to stave off defeat.

The Canterbury athletes will be as follows.: —100 Yards, Moyes, Beniamin, Bishop ; 220 Yards, Moyes, Benjamin, Bishop : 440 Yards, Moyes, Cox, Kissel ; &80 Yards, Foster, Cox, Robertson : One Mile, Robertson, Foster, Kissel ; 120 Yards Hurdles, Rice, Bishop, Burns ; 440 Yards Hurdles, Rice, Bishop, Benjamin ; Throwing the Hammer, Benjamin, Stowe, Rice ; Putting the weight, Stowe, Rice, Burns ; High Jump, Burns, Cook, Foster; Long Jump, Bishop, Rice, Burns : One Mile Walk, Stubberfield and Cook ; relay team, Moves, Cox, Kissel, Foster. Some of these are very formidable opponents. For instance, Moyes won the quarter from scratch recently in 51 4-ssec, while Burns an i Rice are above the average. I’he fol'owing have been chosen to represent. the Victoria College, Wellington : —lOO Yards. T. E. Seddon, F. P. Kellv, H. W. King : 220 Yards, T. E. Seddon, F. P. Kelly, A. S. The English pedestrian, C. W. Hart, who has been endeavouring to walk two thousand miles in thirty-one days, proved successful in his task, having an hour or two to spare at the finish. On one or two occasions, owing to illness, he got behind hisi schedule time, but sticking to the task with indomitable energy, managed to successfully carry it through. *** * V >

There is every probability that a local branch of the New Zealand Boxing Association will shortly be formed in Auckland. The matter is being warmly taken up by a number of enthusiasts, and a meeting is to be called after Easter to consider what shall be done in the matter.
