INTOXICATING CHOCOLATE.
One of the principal confectioners in Glasgow last month imported some for-eign-made chocolate called “ Liquer Chocolate,” and having reason to suspect the presence of spirit in the confectionery, determined to know his standing as regards the law before selling this toothsome sweetmeat. He accordingly submitted a sample to the Inland Revenue authorities, and analyses revealed the astonishing fact that it contained no less than ten per cent, of proof spirit ! Instructions were given to the effect that its sale will entail liability to a spirit license. Ten per cent, of proof spirit is about the normal alcoholic strength in bitter beer.—“ Wine and Spirit Trade Record.”
