BOWLING

The New Zealand Bowling Association have adopted the following new rules : — (1) That the bowls to be used in the matches under the auspices of the association shall not exceed '3'Albs, and must have been made by a recognised maker, and (2) that the use of bowls that have been tampered with by weighting be prohibited in all - matches.

C. H. Livesey, of Brighton, has won the Single-handed Championship of Victoria. An exchange says that he is a fine stamp of a bowler, tall, with any amount of reach, cool in his play, has a perfect delivery, and always able to meet his opponents on short, medium, and long lengths. His bowls are large and heavy, with a nice No. 3 draw, and he handles them in masterful style. His success was very popular, and he was warmly congratulated.

■ In a book issued by Messrs Alcock and Co., of Melbourne, some interesting particulars are given on the game. The most important part, however, is an article headed “ Hints by a Leading Bowler.” The hints are evidently written by one well up in all the intricacies of the game, and t.e has succeeded in writing some interesting notes, well worth perusing. Starting off with a' few introductory rematlis, the writer divides his notes into sections, headed thus :—Selection of Your Woods ; How to Stand on the Mat : the Leader, No. 1, No. 2, or Scorer : No. 3. or First Mate; and the Captain. _ No. 2 players should cheer up after reading how important in a rink they are considered by the author. It will, I think, be news to all third players to know that they are expected “to get the captain’s bowls ready for him.” There is some good advice, too for captains, and the final injuction reads: —“And lastly, don’t swear at your men — in public !” * * * *
