THE LYTTELTON REGATTA.
The Lyttelton Regatta took place on New Year’s Day in fine weather, with a fresh seabreeze. As usual the attendance was very large. There were 14,000 passengers booked for Lyttelton at Chi istchurch alone. Five vessels competed in the coasting schooners’ race, and the Amelia Sims won by 14| minutes from Ronga, with Jessie Nicoll third. In the first-class yacht race Kiaora beat Waitangi by 13 minutes 11 seconds, including llmin 4sec handicap. In the third-class yacht race Water witch was first, Bettina second, and Pakeha third. Lieutenant ‘ Stewart’s boat (H.M s. Archer) won the open boat sailing race. The second-class yacht race fell through. The following are the results of the rowing races: — Maiden Pairs : Avon 1, Canterbury 2, Timaru 3. Junior Pairs: Petone 1, Union 2, Akaroa 3. Senior Pairs: Christchurch Amateur Club 1, Canterbury 2. Youths’ Pairs : Union 1, Canterbury 2, Akaroa 3. Ships’ Boat Race: Cupica 1, Rotomahana2. Senior Double Sculls: Christchurch Amateur Club I, Akaroa 2. Youths’ Double Sculls: Canterbury 1, Union 2, Akaroa 3. Junior Double Wculls : Union 1, Akaroa 2 and 3. Maiden Double (Sculls: Union 1 Avon 2, Union 3. Single Sculls : Crosbie (Christchurch Amateur Club) 1, Woodill (Akaroa) 2. Youths’ Single Sculls: Deighton (Avon) 1, Little (Canterbury) 2, Webb (Union) 3. Man-o’-war Boat Race : H.M.s. Archer 1. The submarine explosion was very successful, an old steamer (the Jane) being blown up with 6001 b of guncotton. Swimming races and shore sports were also held. The occasion is always made a gala day, and this year it was no exception to the rule. Although we can provide better lacing, I am afraid it is many a long day before there will be 14,000 people at a regatta in Auckland.
