AQUATICS

(By

The Reefer.”)

Swimmers and followers of the sport the world over, as well as all admirers of a brilliant athlete, will, I am sure, regret to hear that an accidesnt which is likely to incapacitate him for some time befel Dick Cavill on Boxing Day. On the morning, of that day, noticing several stingarees about the bottom of the baths, he thought to amuse himself with a little revolver practice, and after firing a couple of shots, found that the mechanism had gone wrong. While trying to adjust it the weapon accidentally exploded, and the bullet lodged in the champion’s wrist, causing intense pain. Dick was taken to the Sydney Hospital, where an operation resulted in the missile being removed, and he returned home with the arm in a sling, where it will probably remain for some time —several weeks, at any rate. The happening is very much to be regretted, for the oain it has caused and inconvenience it will cause the lad, as well as the fact that he cannot compete in the remaining championships—those at 500yds, 100yds, 220yds, and 880yds—all of which were at his mercy. * « # • '

The Logan 30-footer Culwulla put up a fine performance in Sydney in the Rawson Cup Race, sailed under the auspices of the

Prince Alfred Yacht Club. There was a snorting breeze blowing, which buried the yachts to thier hatches, but the Auckland yacht fairly romped along, and won by a minute and a-half from the Fife-designed Fleetwing. There were nine starters. Petrel, another Auckland-built yacht, was driven ashore in the blow, and rather badly damaged. The mishap was caused by the rudder head snapping.
