A “TEETOTAL” PARADISE
Temperance reformers are familiar with the name of Mr F. N. Carrington, an English gentleman who forfeited a fortune rather than continue in ” the Trade,” owing to the prominence he has m connection with the Utopian idea of a feetotal Paradise surrounded by water. He has had one of the most remarkable careers of anyone connected with the Temperance movement, and there is not any doubt ot his genuineness, as his alliance to the cause has been to his material disadvantage. Born in 185’6, a portion of his education was received at Marlborough. Rather than go to the university, he preferred, after a Continental tour, to rake his place in the brewery of his father. Meanwhile he was “ converted.” After sonie time spent, in assisting mission and evangelistic work, the irony of his pbsitibn ovei-whelmed him ; and he cut himself from the prospect of a vast fortune with a comparative pittance. “ I wonder what you get for wearing th a t blue ribbon?” said.a cynic to him once. “ I am not certain of the exact amount, he replied, “ but I know it costs me £20,000 a year.” There are none of the breed of Carrington amongst the prohibitionists of this colony ! The Middlesex justices are a committee to consider the points,, arising out of the Farnham case, and the point came up (from the chairman) that where there were the most licenses there weyb also the fewest cases of drunkenness. We leaVe this point to the consideration of the teetotalers.
