THE HOP MARKET.
Advices from Melbourne state that the growing hop crop in Victoria will be the smallest produced for over twenty years, as most- growers have given up the indusyi try. From 500 to 600 bales is the outsidequantity that can be looked for under the-, most favourable conditions. This will throw a greater demand on to Tasmania. and will thus indirectly re-i) fleet on this market. English mail adv vices also confirm the shortage in ;tfi® Kent crop, already reported in our cables.' A member of a prominent firm of hop .fatfl tors in London is said to have expbessed the opinion that £l5 per cwt. is quite likely to be reached. On the Continent too, the crop is reported to be short, no country except Russia having any shirplusj worth mentioning, and Russian hops ate not liked. > >
