BARREL OF BEER IN A DRAPER’S SHOP

At the Ararat Court recently a peculiarbreach of the licensing law was charged agaiiist Caeherine M’Phee, storekeeper, Buangor. According to Constable M’Cormack for the prosecution, he noticed at the raihfav station a barrel of beer addressed TO Mrs M’Phee. Under a search warrant he examined that lady’s premises, and found the barrel unopened in a draper’s case. Mrs M’Phee swore the beer was for her husband’s private Use. Mi. Grano, for the defence, •successfully contended the beer was not “ exposed for sale,” and the case against Mrs M’Phee was dismissed, but Mr M'Phee was fined ,£5, and one hour’s imprisonment. Airs M’Phee was. subsequently fined £25 for selling beer without a license on September 25. Notice of intention to appeal being given, a -stay of execution for fourteen days was allowed. — (Melbourne •• Sportsman.”)
