A N.S.W. ILLICIT DISTILLER.

At the Water . Police Court, Sydney, recently, Henry Arnold was prosecuted for having an illicit still on his premises at Surry Hills. ‘The evidence showed that the still was one of the most complete yet seized in New South Wales. It was capable of turning out spirit, perhaps 63 over proof. Defendant, a brewer, stated that he knew nothing about distillation. He found out only a few days previously ' that Alfred Leahy was making* spirit. Leahy gave evidence to the effect that he made the plant, and that Arnold bad nothing to do with its construction. He told defendant he was distilling oil of lemon. Witness was distilling rectified spirits of wine, which was pure alcohol. Defendant was fined £25. or. in default, two months’ imprisonment. Alfred Leahy was then charged with having an illicit still under his control. He pleaded guilty, and was fined £250, with costs, or in default, twelve months’ imprisonment. Leahy was further charged with having a still under his control at his residence, ]O. Mary-street. He again pleaded guilty, and was fined £l5O. or in default six months’ imprisonment, the sentences to be cumulative. It was stated that accused had been twice convicted for a similar offence, and on the last occasion was fined £3OO, or in default twelve months’ imprisonment. He refused to pay the fines and went to gaol. —(Melbourne “ Sportsman.”)
