MR MASEFIELD EXPLAINS
In the course ot his opening speech in tho electoral campaign. Mr.’T. T. Masefield stated last week that a matter that had been brought into the contest for the Grey Lynn seat was that he was a nominee' of the brewers. Nothing could be further from the truth. He had not seen a brewer, or a brewer’s supporter, in connection with the election. No one had come to him to offer the least inducement to him on behalf of the brewers to contest the election. He was surprised that Mr Fowlds should nave stated that he (Mr Masefield) was coming forward as the nominee of the brewers, and that, if necessary, other candidates would "be brought forward to keep George Fowlds out. He hoped that his Prohibition friends would not be misled by such statements, and thought that this was striking below the belt. It had beeo said that his candidature Was a revenge for Maungnturoto. He knew nothing about that : he- did not even know where the place was. Another misstatement was that he intended to retire. They could depend on it that he would go to the poll, whether elected or not.
