PROHIBITION PLAYED OUT
In connection with a State election, z which was held recently in A ermont, United States, the New York " World ” in commenting on the number of votes cast for the four candidates who aspired for the honour of being Governor, says that the majority of the people of the State have clearly registered their judgment against the tyranny, the rottenness, < and above all, the humbug and futility of prohibition laws that fail to ttop drinking, and whose attempted enforcement is far more . prolific of evil than the drunkenness'-which-t-hey fail to stop drinkThe Philadelphia “ Press ” remarks that the days of prohibition in Vermont are numbered. The New York “ Tribune says it is clear that a large body of the peoule of Vermont, at the election, wished to make as emphatic as possible the expression of a wish for the repeal of the present prohibition law, the enforcement of which is little more than mockery ._ They were tired of the-h-ypoct’isy.
